LORETTO, Pa. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team dropped a pair of close contests at Saint Francis U on Saturday afternoon. The two losses eliminate the Knights from Northeast Conference Tournament contention.
The Knights had made the NEC postseason in each of the last two seasons.
Fairleigh Dickinson is now 12-32, 5-9 in the NEC. Saint Francis improves to 33-22, 13-3 in NEC.
Game one saw the Knights hit three home runs but could not make a late game comeback. The second game saw the Knights get within one but the Red Flash tacked on a pair late to preserve the win.
Game 1 (Saint Francis U 6, Fairleigh Dickinson 4)
Fairleigh Dickinson got on the board first in the game one. The Knights got back-to-back solo home runs from
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) and
Kellie Natham (Arcadia, Calif./Maranatha). The two home runs were the fifth of the season for both freshmen.
Saint Francis would then score one in the first, three in the second and two in the third to build a 6-2 lead after three.
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) cut the lead to 6-4 with a two-run home run to center field. It was Slye's fourth of the season and 13th and 14th RBI of the season.
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) (4-13) took the loss after allowing four runs -- two earned -- in two innings to work. Ethel Santai (8-8) got the win after going four innings.
Game 2 (Saint Francis U 4, Fairleigh Dickinson 1)
The two starters --
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical) for Fairleigh Dickinson and Ketarah DeVries for Saint Francis -- allowed only one run combined over the first four-plus innings of the game.
The Red Flash opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Neither team scored until Saint Francis U made it 2-0 with a bases loaded walk of Jordan Seneca in the bottom of the fifth.
Reanna Cervantes (Upland, Calif./Upland) then hit her second home run of the doubleheader and sixth of the season to make it a 2-1 ball game in the top of the sixth.
Sierra McKee provided some insurance for the Red Flash with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth -- her sixth of the season -- to give the Red Flash a 4-1 lead.
