STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – FDU softball defeated Wagner by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Knights take the season series over the Seahawks.
After being pushed back two days because of rain, FDU and Wagner met on Tuesday to complete their three-game NEC set. Both sides split a Friday doubleheader before rain rolled into town for the weekend. Both teams traded blows in the first inning, leaving things level at one after the opening frame. Wagner would strike again in the bottom of the second, scoring two more runs off FDU starter
Jamie Sencion. FDU got a run back in the top of the fourth inning, as
Dimitra Milonopoulos scored on an error to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Sophia Ayala and
Zoe Milonopoulos reached base, putting pressure on the Seahawks as the top of the Knights order came to the plate.
Madison Rishel came through, lacing a double into left field to tie the game at three. With the go-ahead run on third,
Brianna Holguin came to the plate, and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Milonopoulos scored on the bunt, and
Madison Rishel was able to come around and score on an error at the plate. With that, FDU took a 5-3 lead.
Wagner threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Down to their final out, the Seahawks put two runners on, sending the winning run up to the plane in the form of Elaine Doukas. Sencion was able to get Doukas to fly out, ending a dramatic win for FDU.
FDU returns home to host Saint Peter's in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch in Hackensack will be at 3 p.m.
