TEANECK, N.J. – Freshman
Tim Quinn (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) threw eight strong innings to pitch the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team to a split of a doubleheader with Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. The Knights (22-24, 12-13 NEC) won the first game 2-1 and then dropped the second to the Blue Devils (19-25, 11-11 NEC) by a score of 8-4.
GAME ONE
In the bottom of the first inning, with runners on first and second, senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) hit a hard ground ball to second base, CCSU's second baseman threw the ball away trying to get an out at second base and then the Blue Devil shortstop made his own throwing error. When the play was over both runners has scored and Giakas was at second base with no one out. Senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) and junior
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) both singled and then came in to score on the errors.
Those two runs were all the support that Quinn needed as he pitched eight dominating innings in the 2-1 victory. Quinn held the Blue Devils scoreless through seven innings and surrendered a single run in the eighth as a soft line drive just tipped off Sprague's glove on a leaping attempt.
Over eight innings, Quinn gave up one run on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. He improves to 4-2 on the season with the victory and he has now pitched at least 6.2 innings in each of his four starts.
McCann led the offense with three hits. He was three-for-four at the plate in his return to the lineup after missing seven games with an injury.
Casey Brown started for CCSU and allowed just two unearned runs on six hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Redshirt junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) pitched the ninth and worked around a leadoff double to secure his seventh save of the season.
GAME TWO
CCSU scored a single run in the top of the first, but Sprague quickly erased the deficit with a line drive home run on the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning. The homer was Sprague's sixth of the season.
Brennan added a solo-shot in the fourth and senior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) drilled a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh, but the Knights still fell by a score of 8-4.
CCSU plated five runs in the third inning to jump out to a 7-1 lead before taking an 8-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore
Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) singled to lead off the final inning and Roman followed with a homer, but it was not enough.
Freshman
Chris Kachmar (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) takes the loss he falls to 5-3 on the season. CCSU's Andrew Hinckley picked up the complete game victory. He improves to 6-3.
Brennan and Romano led the FDU offense in the game with two hits apiece.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., but the Knights will host Senior Day prior to the game. That ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12:40 p.m.
