GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team split a doubleheader with LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. After the split the Knights end the day with a 25-25 overall record and a 15-14 record in the Northeast Conference. LIU is now 15-33 and 9-15 in NEC play.
FDU won the first game 8-7 and LIU won the second 10-9 in extra innings.
The games were played at Adelphi University and the series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday, also at Adelphi.
GAME ONE
Senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) connected on a two-out, two-run double in the top the ninth inning to give FDU a 8-7 lead over LIU. The double completed a comeback for the Knights who trailed 7-4 going to the eighth inning.
In the top of the eighth, the Knights scored two runs on a triple by senior
Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) that cut the deficit to 7-6.
Freshman
Evan Layne (Brooklyn, N.Y./Telecommunications) recorded the final out of the bottom of the eighth to pick of the victory, but it was the relief effort of senior
John Chalupa (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) who pitched a scoreless seventh and got the first two outs in the eighth to keep the it a 7-4 game.
Freshman
Tim Quinn (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) started and worked six innings, allowing seven runs, but just two earned. He gave up nine hits and one walk, while striking out five.
Senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) started the ninth inning and redshirt junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) recorded the final out for his eighth save.
The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second.
FDU had 13 hits in the game with McClure going four-for-four at the plate and driving in three runs.
Giakas and sophomore
Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) each had two hits.
GAME TWO
LIU scored a single run in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the walk off victory.
The Knights tied the game in the top of the seventh with a single run after LIU score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
FDU tied it in the seventh on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by senior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford). FDU's also scored twice in the top of the sixth inning with junior
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) hitting a triple and then scoring on a wild pitch before Giakas launched his 12
th home run of the season.
Giakas, McCann, Brennan, Fatzinger and freshman Craig Alleyne all had two hits in the game. Brennan also drove in a team-high two runs.
Junior
Danny Demetrops (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed just one run, but suffered the loss. He falls to 1-3 on the season.
Freshman
Chris Kachmar (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) started and allowed five runs, three earned, over 4.1 innings.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday.
