Baseball Rolls to 10-3 Victory over Bryant

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team earned a 10-3 victory over Bryant on Saturday behind a quality pitching performance from freshman Chris Kachmar (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen).  The Knights (14-13, 5-4 NEC) collected 10 runs, while holding the Bulldogs (18-6, 7-1 NEC) scoreless until the seventh inning.

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be played on Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m.  The final game of the series will follow at approx. 2:30 p.m.

Kachmar held the powerful Bryant offense scoreless until the seventh inning and limited the Bulldogs to just one hit over the first five innings.  He surrendered a second hit in the sixth inning and another in the seventh before being lifted for reliever Danny Demetrops (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) with the bases loaded and two outs.

Kachmar pitched 6.2 innings and allowed three runs, zero earned, on three hits and six walks.  He struck out a career-high 10 batters.

The FDU offense went to work early with a single run in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) singled to center and eventually came around to score on senior Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius )'s base hit up the middle.

Senior Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) pushed the lead to 2-0 by hitting his second home run of the season in the third inning.

The Knights broke the game open in the fourth inning with senior John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) sending a two-run double down the left field line and then scoring on an RBI single by senior Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford).

In the fifth, sophomore Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) lined a double to left to drive in a run and a sacrifice fly by McCann followed by an RBI single from Giakas made it an 8-0 game.

FDU scored two more runs in the sixth with the first coming on a sac fly by Sprague and the second on a Bryant fielding error.

Bryant scored three runs in the seventh on a triple to center by Robby Rinn.

Kachmar improves to 4-1 on the season with the victory.  Bryant's Brandon Bingel took the loss; he falls to 4-2 on the year.

All 10 FDU players to bat in the game recorded a hit.  Fatzinger and Giakas each recorded two hits.  Fatzinger, Giakas and freshman Evan McDonald (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) all doubled once.

With three runs batted in Giakas improved his team leading RBI total to 21.

McCann picked up his 22nd stolen base of the season.

The series is now even 1-1 and will conclude with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday.
