Baseball Drops Doubleheader to SHU

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped a pair of Northeast Conference games to Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon.  The Knights (18-21, 8-10 NEC) fell 6-5 in the first game and 3-0 in the second to the Pioneers (21-14, 12-2 NEC).

GAME ONE
Senior John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) delivered a long two-run home run to left field to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning and senior Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pioneers answered in the top of the seventh.

Dan Schock lifted a two-run home run to left that put Sacred Heart in front 6-5.  The Knights got two runners on in bottom of the seventh, but Pioneer reliever Baylor Sundhal was able to keep FDU off the board.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead with a single run in the first, two in the second and another in the third.

Sacred Heart's James Cooksey (4-2) earned the win and Sundahl picked up the save (2).

Junior Danny Demetrops (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) (1-2) took the loss for the Knights.

Freshman Chris Kachmar (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) started and pitched five innings allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits.  He did not factor in the decision.

Giakas drove in three runs in the game and sophomore Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) went three-for-four at the plate.  Giakas finished the day leading the team in hitting (.336), home runs (7) and runs batted in (32).
 
GAME TWO
Sacred Heart's James Taubl out pitched FDU's Corey Zeller (Carroll, Ohio/Bloom Carroll) in the second game of the doubleheader, which saw neither team go to the bullpen.  Taubl held the Knights scoreless in the 3-0 victory, he improved to 4-0.

Zeller pitched seven innings and surrendered three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk.  He also struck out three batters.

The FDU offense was limited to three hits by Taubl with Giakas, senior Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) and sophomore Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) all collecting hits.

Roman and Fatzinger's hits came back-to-back in the fifth inning giving FDU runners on first and second with one out, but Taubl was able to work out of the jam with a pair of ground outs.

The Pioneers scored two runs in the third and added a single run in the fourth.
 
The series will conclude with a single nine inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Prior to the game at approximately 12:45 p.m. the "First Knights" will be honored, a group of FDU alumni from the 1950s and early 1960s.
