Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team split a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The Knights (17-17, 7-7 NEC) won the first game 4-1 and the Mountaineers (5-25, 3-12 NEC) took the second 5-2. The series will conclude with a single nine inning game on Sunday.
GAME ONEThe Knights fell behind 1-0 in the first game on Saturday and the offense remained quiet until the fifth inning before breaking out for a 4-1 victory.
Freshman
Evan McDonald (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) and sophomore
Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) connected on back-to-back singles to open the frame with McDonald eventually scoring on a wild pitch and Romano coming in on an RBI single by sophomore
Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus).
Junior
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) led off the sixth with a double and came around to score on a double by McDonald to make it a 3-1 game.
The Knights tacked on a fourth run in the top of the seventh, but four runs was more than enough for freshman pitcher
Chris Kachmar (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen).
Kachmar continued his dominance of NEC foes by pitching seven strong innings. He limited the Mountaineers to one run on five hits while striking out nine and walking just one batter.
After allowing a run in the first he limited the Mount to just three base runners over the final six innings, including retiring the final eight batters he faced. Kachmar closed out the game by pitching back-to-back one-two-three innings.
The victory gives him a team-high five wins on the season. He has a 5-1 overall record on the season and lowered his team leading earned run average to 2.33.
Connor Graber took the loss for Mount; he falls to 0-7 on the season.
McDonald finished with a team-high two hits and connected on his 11
th double of the season. He drove in one run as did Fatzinger and senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area).
GAME TWOThe Mountaineers earned a 5-2 victory in game two with three early runs against FDU starter
Corey Zeller (Carroll, Ohio/Bloom Carroll).
The Mount scored twice in the first inning and added a third run in the bottom of the second.
FDU got on the board in the fourth inning with a two-run home run from redshirt junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville). After a single by senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), Brenna launched his fourth home run of the season over the left field fence.
The Mountaineers added two additional runs against Zeller in the fifth inning. Junior
Danny Demetrops (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) entered the game to work out of further trouble in the fifth.
Zeller pitched 4.1 innings and surrendered five runs, four earned. He falls to 3-2 on the season with the loss. Demetrops pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed just two hits, while striking out two.
Chad Diehl earned the win for the Mount and improves to 2-7 on the season.
Brennan went two-for-three in the second game and drove in both runs.
Senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park), Giakas and Siebler also had hits for the Knights.
The final game of the series will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
