Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - The offensive surge continued for the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team as it rolled to a 17-2 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Friday in the first game of a four game Northeast Conference series. The Knights (16-16, 6-6 NEC) scored seven runs in the top of the first and then cruised to the win over the Mountaineers (4-24, 2-11 NEC).
The Knights scored 17 runs on 21 hits and limited the Mountaineers to just seven hits and two runs. FDU has recorded 45 hits over its last two games.
The Knights seven-run first inning was fueled by five Mount St. Mary's errors and a three-run home run by senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville). Senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) reached on an error to start the game and junior
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) reached via hit by pitch with Giakas following with his sixth home run of the season.
Redshirt junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) and sophomore
Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) as well as senior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) all reached on errors and eventually scored. Roman scored the Knights sixth run of the inning on a RBI double by sophomore
Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus). Fatzinger scored FDU's final run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Sprague as the Knights batted around in the first.
The Mountaineers made seven errors in the game.
FDU added two more runs in the third as McCann drilled a two-run double to left center and scored four in the fourth with the big blow – a two-run double – coming off the bat of senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area).
Mount scored a single run in the second and third innings, but FDU pitching held them scoreless the rest of the way.
After the fourth the Knights were held scoreless until the eighth when senior
Jose DeLeon (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) drove in two runs with a double and Giakas lifted a sacrifice fly to score a third run.
Romano belted a solo home run, his third of the season, in the ninth to make it a 17-2 game.
Freshman
Tim Quinn (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East), making his first collegiate start, picked up the victory with seven solid innings. He limited the Mountaineers to two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four. He improves to 3-1 on the season with the victory.
Mount's Anthony Bonadio took the loss to fall to 0-2. He allowed 11 runs, six earned, in 3.1 innings.
Freshman
Evan Layne (Brooklyn, N.Y./Telecommunications) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and senior
Nick Cuono (Hawthorne, N.J./Montvale Saint Joseph ) worked a one-two-three ninth.
Fatzinger finished the day with four hits in five at bats. He also scored four runs. Siebler recorded three hits in four at bats and Sprague, McCann, Giakas, Brennan and Romano all had two.
Giakas drove in a team-high four runs with McCann, DeLeon, Romano and Siebler all knocking in a pair.
The series will resume with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
