Box Score 2 TEANECK, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Bryant on Sunday afternoon. The Knights (14-15, 5-6 NEC) also dropped the Northeast Conference series to the Bulldogs (20-6, 9-1 NEC) three games to one.
GAME ONEThe Knights made a late comeback attempt, but fell to the Bulldogs, 11-9, in extra innings in the first game of the doubleheader.
Bryant scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but FDU quickly tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) connected on a leadoff single and junior
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) followed with a single through the right side. Senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and redshirt junior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) lined a single to center to drive in FDU's first run. The Knights added their second run on a double play ground out later in the inning.
Bryant retook the lead in the top of the third, but again the Knights had an answer in the bottom half. Sprague started the inning by reaching on an error, he moved to second on a balk and to third on a sacrifice by McCann before coming in to score on a double by Giakas.
The Bulldogs grabbed a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by third baseman Zach Wood and appeared to break the game open with two runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth.
However the Knights had other plans.
Sprague connected on a grand slam in the sixth to make it a one run game at 8-7. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but FDU was able to tie the game with a two-run double by senior
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford).
The comeback forced extra innings, but fell short as the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the ninth to 11-9.
Freshman
Tim Quinn (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) (2-1) pitched well, but took the loss in relief. Justin Snyder (1-2) earned the win for the Bulldogs.
Sprague finished the game with two hits and five runs batted in. Giakas and sophomore
Bobby Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan ) also had two hits.
GAME TWOThe Bulldogs earned a 19-1 win in game two of the doubleheader. Redshirt junior
Logan Frati (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) took the loss for the Knights he falls to 4-1 on the season. Steve Theetge of Bryant improved to 3-0 with the win for Bryant.
The Bulldogs used the long ball, connecting on seven home runs and 23 total hits.
The Knights run came in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Jason Fatzinger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus).
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday at Coppin State.
