Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped the opening game of a Northeast Conference series with Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon. The Knights (11-11, 3-2 NEC) and Pioneers (11-10, 5-0 NEC) played a single game and began the second game, but it was suspended because of rain and lightning in the third inning.
The suspended game will continue on Saturday at 1 p.m. and be followed by a seven inning game. The series will now conclude on Sunday with a single game scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
GAME ONEThe Knights fell to the Pioneers by a score of 9-6 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
The Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by senior Pat McClure. Senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) doubled with one out and two batters later McClure drove a pitch over the left field wall.
The Pioneers strung together four hits in the bottom of the third, but Flack limited Sacred Heart to just one run.
Sacred Heart grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Zach Short.
The Pioneers plated two additional runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
The Knights pushed one run across on a RBI infield single by freshman Craig Alleyne in the top of the seventh.
In the eighth, senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on a double by McClure. Two batters later senior
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score McClure and cut the deficit to 7-5.
Sacred Heart added two runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Knights scored a single run in the top of the ninth.
Flack took the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season. James Cooksey (3-2) earned the win for the Pioneers.
McClure and Giakas each collected two hits for the Knights. McClure drove in a game-high three runs and his home run was his first of the season.
GAME TWOThe game was stopped in the bottom of the third inning with the score tied 0-0. The game will resume on Saturday at 1 p.m.
