The Peacocks from Jersey City, N.J. entered the weekend with an 0-1 record after falling to Lafayette 61-57 in their season opener on Monday (Nov.14). In Friday's opener of the Johnny Bach Classic, the Peacocks topped Lipscomb 90-77. Saturday, the Peacocks suffered a 63-41 defeat to the host Rams.
Fordham forced the Peacocks into 26 turnovers and only allowed them to connect on 14 field goals (on 40 shots) in the game, including just a pair of three-pointers (on 16 attempts).
The Peacocks feature a veteran squad led by Qadir Welton, who is one of four seniors on this year's squad. Weldon leads the team with 17.7 points per contest. Along with fellow senior Trevis Wyche and sophomore guard Antwon Portley, the Peacocks returned their top three scorers from a season ago.
Last season, the Peacocks posted a 14-16 overall record, including a 12-8 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). After qualifying for the MAAC Tournament, the Peacocks were eliminated in the opening round by Fairfield.
Last Time Out for the Knights:
Stephan Jiggetts amassed a triple-double and
Darian Anderson poured in a game-high 28 points as the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team rolled to a 90-72 victory over Lipscomb University at day two of the Johnny Bach Classic at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
Jiggetts filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the win. The assist and rebound totals were both career-highs for the third-year guard, who became the first Knight according to the school record book to accomplish the rare feat of a triple-double.* Jiggetts is the first NEC player to tally double figures in three different categories since Quinnipiac's James Feldeine did it against Monmouth back on February 25, 2010.
Four of the Knights five starters scored in double figures including
Mike Holloway's 22-point, eight-rebound effort.
The Knights shot a red-hot 19-of-24 (79.2%) from the floor in the second half, totaling 58 points, which is the most the team has scored in a half since it amassed 64 two seasons ago against Princeton.
Herenda's Take:
"That second half was a glimpse of what our team can become this year. It started with Darian coming back from a tough injury last night and then it spread like wildfire.
"That was the
Stephan Jiggetts we need him to be. He worked so hard this summer and he got what he deserved with his triple-double. That was an incredible performance.
"Now we have the quickest turnaround in my coaching career. We are still in the locker room at 8 p.m. and we turn around and play a really tough and well-coached Saint Peter's team tomorrow. It will be here before you know it."
