FDU Men's Basketball Report 11/9
All-Time Series:
- Tonight is the fourth ever meeting between the Knights and Devils on the hardwood.
- The Knights are 3-0 all-time against the Florham Campus.
- FDU-Metro won last season's meeting between the two teams by routing the Florham Campus 111-70 on Nov. 16 at Stratis Arena.
- In the win, Mike Holloway netted a career-high 21 points, while Earl Potts Jr. double-doubled with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
- The Knights' bench dominated the battle of reserves by outscoring the Devils' bench 52-17 on the night.
Last Time Out:
Despite a game-high 27 points from junior guard
Darian Anderson, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team dropped its 2016-17 season opener 91-70 to Seton Hall on Friday night at Walsh Gymnasium.
The defending BIG EAST champions excelled from close range, tallying 52 of their 91 points in the paint. At the forefront of that performance was Angel Delgado, who amassed a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds on 11-of-15 shooting.
The Knights trailed by five at the break but the Pirates caught fire in the second half, connecting on 22-of-28 shots for an impressive 78.6 percent performance. The hot shooting allowed the home team to overcome a 13-for-27 effort at the free throw line.
Notable Knights:
Darian Anderson - 27 points (4-of-8 3FG) three steals, three assists
Darnell Edge - 11 points (5-6 FT)
Tyrone O'Garro - 11 rebounds (career-high)
Herenda's Take:
"I am really proud of how we battled and withstood a number of Seton Hall's runs but they were just too big and too good for us in their building tonight. Delgado was a real issue tonight for us and Rodriguez and Carrington were very efficient as well, but I cannot say enough about
Darian Anderson and the night he had."
"This game will prove to help our team down the road. We will learn from it and get better. That is what we do. I am very proud of my guys."
News and Notes:
Devil Details:
- The Devils return a roster this season with just two seniors in Donte Ali and James Moran. Ali was the focal point of last year's squad, averaging 13.7 poiints per game and 8.4 rebounds per game, both team-highs.
- Florham was projected to finish last in the MAC Freedom Preseason Coaches' Poll after posting a 4-21 record last season.
- The team returns all of its starting five from the end of last season including three-point shooters Derek Leohner and Steve Herdman.
- Sophomore guard Anthony Mitchell started the last eight games for the Devils last season averaging 13.8 ppg over that span.
- Head Coach Pete Marion begins his 12th season at the helm of the Devils.
Ties that Bind: Marion and
Greg Herenda crossed paths at Seton Hall from 1994-95. Herenda was an assistant on head coach George Blaney's staff, while Marion was the team's head manager. Knights associate head coach
Bruce Hamburger was also a part of that Seton Hall staff as an assistant coach.
Youth Prevails: Featuring the third-youngest team in the nation, the Knights claimed the NEC title last season and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.
Familiar Faces: The young Knights are back for another run this season with 11 players returning from last year's 13-man roster, including four of the team's five starters.
Quite a Turnaround: The Knights experienced a 10-win improvement by winning 18 games last season after an 8-21 record in 2014-15. It was the first winning record for the program since the 2005-06 season (20-12).
Scoring Surge: The Knights averaged 77.5 points per game last season, which was tops in the NEC. It's the first time FDU led the conference in scoring since the 2005-06 season.
Next up:
The Knights will spend this weekend in the Bronx as they play three games in three days at Fordham University's historic Rose Hill Gym. The weekend begins on Friday when they face off against the host Rams at 6 p.m. The Knights then take on Lipscomb on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and St. Peter's on Sunday at 1 p.m.
