Volleyball Swept by Central Connecticut

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest to Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Knights fell 25-17 in the first set before losing 25-9. The Blue Devils rounded out the match, taking the third set 25-18.
 
With the loss, the Knights fall to 3-28 overall and 1-12 in the Northeast Conference. The Blue Devils improve to 14-11 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
 
The first set started out close and was tied 2-2 before the Blue Devils started to create a gap. Central Connecticut outscored the Knights 6-2 to build up an 8-4 lead. Fairleigh Dickinson brought things within two points, 8-6, before the Blue Devils scored three in a row to take an 11-6 lead. The Knights hung around but Central Connecticut continued its momentum and eventually built a 16-11 lead. A kill from Gala Galabova extended the lead to 19-13. A Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) closed the gap to 22-17 but three straight points from the Blue Devils closed out the first set.
 
The second set wasn't nearly as close as the first. The Blue Devils displayed dominance right from the start, scoring four straight points to start en route to an 8-1 lead. The Knights put a handful of points on the board but there was no stopping Central Connecticut, which built up a 16-4 lead. Freshman Annabel Reyes (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) put another point on the board for the Knights with a kill and helped with a block along with Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) but the Blue Devils were relentless, scoring the final five points of the set.
 
Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) opened up the third set with a service ace to give the Knights a brief lead. Central Connecticut quickly tied things up and the two teams exchanged points. The Blue Devils tied things up at three and scored three more points to take a 6-3 lead. The Knights showed their typical tenacity, keeping the set close. A Laton kill cut the lead to 9-7 but four more Blue Devils' points gave them the 13-7 advantage. Central Connecticut benefitted from a Fairleigh Dickinson error to take its biggest lead of the set, 21-13. The Knights were able to put together a little run on kills from Reyes and Sabol as well as a Laton service ace o cut the lead to 24-18 but a Morgan Woycik kill ended the set and the match, giving the Blue Devils the win.
 
The Knights hit .042 on the day compared to Central Connecticut's .304.
 
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) led the Knights with seven kills while Raquel Quirarte and Galabova had 10 kills a piece for the Blue Devils.
 
Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) finished with 10 digs while Gallagher had 14 assists. Reyes led the Knights with two blocks on the day.
 
The Knights conclude their season tomorrow when they host Bryant at 3 p.m. at Stratis Arena inside the Rothman Center. The team will honor lone senior Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) prior to the match.
