Knights Close Out Season with Loss to Bryant

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team ended its season with a 3-1 loss to the Bryant Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.
 
With the loss, the Knights end their season with an overall record of 3-29 and a 1-13 mark in Northeast Conference play. The Bryant improves to 19-14 overall and 10-5 in the NEC.
 
Prior to the game, the Knights honored their lone senior, Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon). Laton is the all-time leader in block assists. Before the match against Bryant, she had 321 block assists and added two more today for a today of 323.
 
The first set was close from the beginning and neither team was able to get more than a two-point lead over its opponent. The Knights got on the board first with a Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) kill, but the Bulldogs were not far behind and quickly tied things up. Bryant took a 5-3 lead but kills from Erika Sullivan (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove) and Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) tied things up at five. The set would be tied 11 more times during the remainder of the set. A Wyckoff kill gave the Knights a 16-14 lead, but the Bulldogs added two points in a row to tie things up at 16. The teams exchanged points until finally a Wyckoff kill gave the Knights a 24-23 advantage and a Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) kill closed out the set.
 
The second set started out like the first, with the two teams exchanging points. A kill from Sydney Gorski gave the Bulldogs a 7-5 advantage but the Knights eventually tied things up, 8-8. The Bulldogs started to break open a lead with three kills from Julia Flynn. Another kill from Gorski gave Bryant a 15-10 advantage. The Bulldogs continued to add points to the board and built up its largest lead of the set, 20-12. In true Knights form, they would not go down quietly and rallied to score three in a row. They followed it up with three more straight points to cut the Bulldogs lead to 23-18. Bryant won the set with a Vika Katzen kill.
 
Things started out close in the third set and were tied several times, including 6-6. After that, the Bulldogs slowly started to put some space between them and the Knights. Fairleigh Dickinson brought the score within two, 10-8, before Bryant really started to pull away. An Ava Patterson kill gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the set so far, 18-11. Kills from Kiley Robbins, Gorski and Flynn put Bryant ahead 21-12 which forced the Knights to call a timeout. Flynn added two more kills out of the break to give the Bulldogs a 23-12 lead. The Knights scored three in a row capped off by a Laton kill to stay alive but the Bulldogs brought it to set point. Despite a nice play and kill from Laton, Bryant closed out the set with a Gorski kill.
 
Despite falling behind by as many as six points in the fourth set, the Knights were able to come back to tie things up and make it a very close set down the stretch. Bryant jumped out to a 4-1 lead and built up a 10-4 advantage over the Knights. It was a slow battle for Fairleigh Dickinson, but the Knights eventually tie it up at 15. The score remained close for the rest of the set and was tied five more times. The Knights took a brief lead but the Bulldogs tied it up again at 21. A Sara DePouw closed out the set and the match.
 
Laton capped off her senior season with a team-leading 11 kills against the Bulldogs. Wycoff and O'Sullivan each added six kills.
 
Gallagher and Kirstin Trabert (Corona, Calif./Norco) each recorded 14 assists on the day while Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) at 22 digs. O'Sullivan also had 20 digs for the Knights.
 
Reyes led with seven total blocks while Laton and Wyckoff each had four.
