HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team dropped a Northeast Conference match to St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon in four sets.
The Knights came out strong in the first set to win it 25-15 before the Terriers came back to win the second set 25-17, the third set 26-24 and the fourth set 25-15.
The loss drops the Knights to 3-24 overall and 1-8 in NEC play. The Terriers improve to 8-17 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
The Knights opened up the first set with a 6-1 lead following kills from
Kirstin Trabert (Corona, Calif./Norco),
Rebecca Sabol (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and
Annabel Reyes (Teaneck, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) as well as service ace from
Erika Sullivan (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove). A
Savanna Wray (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) service ace gave the Knights a 10-3 edge over the Terriers before they slowly started to come back. St. Francis closed the gap to 11-8 on a Domenique Gerard kill. The Knights continued to build a lead and did not let it up the rest of the set.
The Knights could not carry that momentum over into the second set. St. Francis built up a 4-1 lead but the Knights brought it within one point on a Reyes kill. Fairleigh Dickinson eventually tied things up at six on a Laton block. The set was tied again at eight before the Terriers built up a lead once again. The ever-relentless Knights battled back from a four-point deficit to tie the score at 15. It was again tied at 16 and 17 but the Terriers went on an 8-0 run to end the set.
The third set would be the closest between the Knights and Terriers. Fairleigh Dickinson took a lead to start out and eventually built up a 17-9 lead. St. Francis scored five straight to cut the Knights' lead to 20-18 and tied things up at 21. The two teams exchanged points and were tied several times before a service ace from Niehely Sosa finally closed out the set for the Terriers.
St. Francis Brooklyn took a commanding lead to start out the fourth set, building up a 9-1 lead. The Knights managed to cut the Terriers' lead to 12-9. St. Francis Brooklyn finished out the fourth set, outscoring the Knights 13-6 and winning the match.
St. Francis Brooklyn hit .224 compared to the Knights .129.
Sabol led the Knights with 10 kills. She also recorded three digs. Trabert recorded 25 assists and five digs while Wray tallied 20 digs. Laton added three blocks in the loss.
Fairleigh Dickinson is back in action next weekend at Robert Morris on Saturday and Saint Francis U on Sunday.
