No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson Wins Bowie State Invitational


LAUREL, Md. - For the second straight season the No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson Knights won the Bowie State Invitational. The Knights did not drop a match all weekend. 

Nicolette Sarin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township High School) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and Morgan Brown (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

The Knights won all three matches on Sunday in the eight-team championship bracket. In the first round the Knights took on Virginia Union and won 788-575. After winning game one easily the Knights had their smallest margin of victrory with a 16-pin, 170-154, in game two. Game three was a 17-pin win and then the Knights pulled away in game five, 212-127. 

In the semifinals the Knights took on Norfolk State. The Spartans won game one, 205-162. Fairleigh Dickinson then won by 30-plus pins in games two through four. The Knights won the fifth game, 223-198. 

Fairleigh Dickinson faced Howard in the championship match. Howard jumped out and won the first two games. Fairleigh Dickinson got one back in game three with a 238-144 win. The Knights cruised in game four as well to tie the match at two all. Howard battled in game five, but Fairleigh Dickinson came out the 192-187 win. The Knights clinched the title with a win in game six by the score of 226-163. 

The Knights return to action next weekend at the Kutztown Invitational on Janaury 22-24.

Day 2 Standings | Individual Standings


LAUREL, Md. – The No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson women's bowling went a perfect 5-0 in the five baker matches. The Knights are a perfect 10-0 over the first two days of the Bowie Invitational.

The Knights are the only unbeaten team remaining the tournament.

Nicolette Sarin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township High School) tops the individual standings with a 230 average over the five games on Saturday. Morgan Brown (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) sits in fifth in the standings with a 205.60 average over the five games. Rebecca Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate), Amy Caruso (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) and Melanie Hannon (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) are all in the Top 10 of the individual standings, sitting in seventh (199.67), ninth (194.67) and 10th (194.40) respectively. 

Northeast Conference foe St. Francis Brooklyn was the first opponent of the afternoon. The Knights earned the 1077-1011 win behind a 238 from Brown, 234 from Sarin and a 232 from Fischer. 

Bowie State--the hosts--were the opponents in the second match of the day. The Knights came out with the 924-779 win. Sarin led the way with a 214. Three other Knights were between a 184 and a 195. 

Fairleigh Dickinson cruised in match three of the day against Virginia Union. The Knights won 1068-664. Three Knights were over 200, led by Sarin's 290. 

Brown led the way with a 215 for the Knights in a win over over Hampton by the score of 961-704. The other four Knights were between 180 and 193. 

Against Howard in the Knights won 1004-833. Sarin led the way once again with a 220. Brown (204) and Amy Caruso (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) (203) were also over 200 for the Knights. 

The third and final day of competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. with three final baker matches tomorrow.

Day 1 Standings | Day 1 Results


LAUREL, Md. - After the first day of the Bowie State Invitational, the No. 7 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson Knights sit atop the field of eight. The Knights and St. Francis Brooklyn are both 5-0 with the Knights holding the tiebreaker of total pins (4816-4487).

The first match of the day saw the Knights take on Virginia Union. Fairleigh Dickinson won each of the five games in the baker format to claim the 989-645 win. The Knights cruised in game one, 192-114, and set the tone. The largest margin came in game two when the Knights won 202-105.

Match two saw the Knights face the Pirates of Hampton. The Knights won all five games and earned the 988-689 win. Game one was close with Fairleigh Dickinson eking out the 11-pin win, 158-147. In games two through five, the Knights won by at least 23 pins.

Howard was the opponent in match three for Fairleigh Dickinson and the Knights won all five games after scraping by in game one. In game one, the Knights won by a single pin, 144-143. Like against Hampton, the Knights won easily in games two through five.

Virginia State gave Fairleigh Dickinson its first two game losses of the afternoon. The Knights won game one, 187-149. The Trojans then won game two, 191-150, and game three, 197-179. Fairleigh Dickinson then won games four and five to earn the 873-825 win over the five games.

In the fifth and final match of the afternoon, the Knights faced the Spartans of Norfolk State. Fairleigh Dickinson won game one and then dropped game two to the Spartans, 223-219. The Knights then rebounded to win games three through five.

Tomorrow on day two, the Knights will play six traditional team matches with action starting at 12 p.m.
