Box Score USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Freshman,
Jessi Reinhardt (Friedberg, Germany/Burggymansium)'s 85th-minute goal was the difference and the Knights snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Air Force.
"We did a really good job of managing the game throughout. We were down 2-1 and the whole second half we pushed forward and created chances", said head coach
Eric Teepe.
Reinhardt fired one in from 15 yards out off a feed from
Patricia Seitz (Pfungstadt, Germany/Baden-Wurttemberg) to put Fairleigh Dickinson (2-3) ahead for good.
Air Force (1-2) had the lead twice during the contest at 1-0 and 2-1. The Falcons got on the board in the 12th minute when Lizzy Delton put home her first of the season off a cross from Ashley Greco.
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) got the Knights back on level terms when she netted her third of the season in the 27th minute. Tice capitalized on her own rebound from near the penalty spot.
Fairleigh Dickinson got some good possession and chances following the goal.
Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) had two chances. The first coming when Hoekstra was denied by a charging Alex Kahalley from the Falcon goal, the second coming when the redshirt junior struck the left post from the left side of the box.
Air Force pulled ahead with less than a minute remaining in the half when Taylor Cobb put home a shot for her first of the season.
After the halftime break, the Knights upped the pressure and generated more chances than in the first 45 minutes.
Noelle Picone (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial ),
Kristina Neri (San Jose, Calif./Santa Tersa), Seitz and Hoekstra all had chances in the second before the Knights broke through.
With the Knights still trailing 2-1,
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) made two saves—one by punching the ball clear—off Falcon corners to keep the score where it was.
Elma Kolenovic (Manhattan, N.Y./NYC Lab)—another freshman—then tied the game in the 75th minute off a one-timer shot for her first of her career. Seitz played in the cross from the right side. The two assists were the first two points of the season for Seitz.
Teepe continued, "The freshmen have been fantastic and with scoring two big goals they have been huge for us. Jessi, plays the game differently, is not afraid from taking a touch in a tight space and the goal she scored today with a run from the midfield. Elma battles and uses her soccer IQ to figure out where she can go in the game. Hannah [Robertson] has been huge as well. They all give us better depth."
Burr then made another key save by going down and to her left in the 82nd minute to keep the score tied at two, which allowed Reinhardt to score the game-winner three minutes later.
"We are still trying to sort out some options and what works best. It is clear that we can play each game differently."
The Knights stay in Colorado for their next game on Sunday against Northern Colorado. Game time is set for 2 p.m. ET in Greeley.
