Hoekstra Scores Three Goals in Victory Over Columbia

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson redshirt junior Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) scored three goals as the Knights earned a 4-1 victory over Columbia on Sunday afternoon.  The FDU women's soccer team improves to 6-5 on the season with the victory, while Columbia falls to 4-4.

"Every time we did go forward, we were dangerous with the ball," head coach Eric Teepe said after the match.  "We created a lot of good opportunities off a counter or off our own possession."

Hoekstra scored the first three goals for FDU as the Knights jumped out to a 3-1 lead just 11 minutes into the second half.

The first goal of the match came in the 12th minute as senior Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) sent a pass to  senior Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) who quickly delivered a pass to Hoekstra who finished for the contest's first goal.  Goulet, at the end line, passed the ball into the 6-yard box for Hoekstra to finish.

Columbia tied the match just five minutes later, scoring on an unassisted goal by Emma Anderson.  Anderson dribbled into the 18-yard box and then worked through a pair of FDU defenders before shooting.

The Knights opened the second half strong with Tice pushing the ball up the side, passing into the box where freshman Elma Kolenovic (Manhattan, N.Y./NYC Lab) touch passed to Hoekstra for the finish.

Kolenovic would find Hoekstra again in the 57th minute to extend FDU's lead.  Kolenovic delivered a long pass to lead Hoekstra down field.  Hoekstra gathered the pass and maintained the edge on the defender before shooting and scoring.

In the 87th minute the Knights would notch their final goal of the match after clearing a Columbia corner kick.

With Columbia pushing players forward for the late corner chance, FDU's Patricia Seitz (Pfungstadt, Germany/Baden-Wurttemberg) was able to clear the corner kick out to Tice who had a clean path to the goal.  Tice dribbled made a move on the keeper and finished to give FDU the 4-1 lead.

"It wasn't like we were only one dimensional in our attack, we were really able to attack a lot of different ways," Teepe said.  "We were able to find Carly with width to stretch them and then find Rachel in the middle, dealing with only one defender."

"I thought it may not have been our best offensive match in terms of shots, but I thought it was our most balanced attack that we have had this year."

The Knights out shot the Lions 17-9 and had eight shots on goal in the victory.

The FDU defense played well, particularly in the second half as they kept Columbia off the scoreboard.

Senior keeper Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) posted four saves as she improved her season record to 6-5 with the victory.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, October 2 against Mount St. Mary's.  FDU and the Mountaineers are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at University Stadium.
