Men's Soccer Falls to Siena

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team fell to Siena on Tuesday afternoon at University Stadium.  The Knights  (2-5) and Saints (1-5-2) were locked in a defensive struggle for 89 minutes before Siena's Paolino Curto found the net to break the tie.

Siena controlled the ball for most of the contest.  The Saints generated 16 shots and seven shots on goal in the match.  Siena also had a number of chances off set pieces as they earned 17 corner kicks.

However, the FDU defense was able to hold off the Saints for most of the match.

Siena possessed the ball for most of the first half, pushing the action into FDU's defensive end.  The Saints earned eight corner kicks and registered seven shots, but just three were on goal.  Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South) stopped all three shots that were on target and his defense contributed by blocking a pair of Siena shots.

The Knights and Saints both attacked early in the second half, but neither team was able to score.  Weigner stopped three shots in the first 15 minutes of the period and a fourth attempt by Siena was blocked by the FDU defense.

The Knights had three shots over the same time, one by junior Jordon Ellison (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and two by junior Christian Dietrich (Berlin, Germany/Flatow-Oberschule), but all three sailed high or wide of the net.

Siena would finally break through in the 89th minute on Curto's goal.  Junior Rosero passed to Curto in the middle of the field, Curto dribbled quickly to his left and then shot low and to the right for the score.

FDU was unable to respond in the remaining minute of play.

For the Knights, Weigner finished with six saves and the defense was able to keep the Saints from scoring off a set piece.

The Knights will return to action on Sunday, September 27 against Stony Brook.  FDU and the Seawolves are scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at University Stadium.
