Box Score HACKENSACK, N.J. –
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) scored in the eighth minute and the Fairleigh Dickinson defense pitched a shutout for the second time in three games to help the Knights top Binghamton 1-0 at University Stadium on Friday night.
Tice gave Fairleigh Dickinson (4-4) a 1-0 lead with her fourth tally of the season. Tice put home a rebound off her own shot that was saved by defender Alyssa Vallar of Binghamton (1-6-1) on the goal line. That was right after
Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) put a shot on goal that was saved by goalkeeper, Katie Hatziyianis.
"You always have to be happy with a win. We had a lot of chances, but we have to a better job of managing the game", said Eric Teepe. "Maybe this is the type of game that you need that second or third goal. Especially, when playing in the Northeast Conference when we have a Friday and Sunday game and winning Sunday is sometimes is putting the game out of reach on Friday."The Knights had multiple chances in the first half to increase their lead but, Hatziyians made four saves and the Knights put an additional 10 shots off target in the opening 45 minutes.
Elma Kolenovic (Manhattan, N.Y./NYC Lab) had a chance in the opening minutes of the second half, but that was turned around by Hatziyianis. Kolenovic then had two more chances in the 51st and 55th minute but one was blocked and one was high.
Hanna Robertson (Eagle Mountain, Utah/West Lake) tried to give the Knights some insurance, but her shot from the left side of the box was right at the Binghamton goalkeeper. Over the next 29 minutes, Hatziyianis, who made 11 saves on the night, made four more saves to keep the Bearcats in the game.
The Knights' backline limited the Bearcats to 10 shots in the game, six of those were on goal. Binghamton was unable to get a shot away in the final 15 minutes.
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) made four saves in the second half after making two in the first to earn her sixth career shutout.
Teepe added, "[Burr] has been very good for us all year and I think it is good that she gets a game like this and gets some more confidence."
Up next for Fairleigh Dickinson is a trip to Queens, New York to face St. John's of the Big East Conference on Sunday. The Red Storm (7-1) received votes in this week's NSCAA Coaches Poll. The game can be seen on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.
