Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team fell to George Mason by a score of 1-0 on Friday night at the George Mason Stadium. The contest was the first of the 2015 Capitol Cup for both squads. The Knights fall to 1-3 with the loss, while the Patriots improve to 2-3 on the year.
George Mason scored in the 27
th minute on a give-and-go play between Daniel Hoffmann and Henning Dirks. Hoffmann passed to Dirks who kicked the ball back to Hoffman for the finish and the 1-0 lead.
Mason had a scoring chance from inside the box in the 55
th minute, but sophomore keeper
Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South) came up with a diving save. Weigner would finish the match with four saves and just one goal allowed.
Aside from the lone GMU goal, the defenses would hold strong in a physical match.
GMU held an 11-7 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
The Knights had a pair of chances late in the game that resulted in the two shots on goal. The first came in the 68
th minute on a shot by senior
Deshawn Forbes (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's College) and the second came in the 82
nd minute on a shot by senior
Christian Dietrich (Berlin, Germany/Flatow-Oberschule). Both shots were saved by GMU's Michael Butts.
Dietrich also had a shot in the 74
th minute, but it was blocked.
FDU earned a corner kick in the 84
th minute, which generated a shot for freshman
Aaron O'Raw (Cork, Ireland/Colaiste Choilm), but the attempt sailed high.
FDU's final two chances to tie the match came in the 88
th minute as senior
Sam Durkot (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield)'s shot went wide. Junior
Enver Caymaz (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) followed with a shot that missed high with just 21 seconds remaining in the match.
The Knights will complete the Capitol Cup with Sunday afternoon's match at American University.
