Box Score HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra's Leah Galton scored twice, including in the game's 82nd minute, to give the Pride a 4-3 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon.
Hofstra (2-2) held a 15-5 shots on goal advantage and a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"We learned a lot. We kind of let Hofstra dominate early. Once we started competing, we showed that we could play with them. The game was a good stepping stone for us," said Knights' head coach
Eric Teepe.
Fairleigh Dickinson (1-2) fell behind early when Galton put the Pride up 1-0 in the ninth minute with a header off a corner kick. Jeannine Molleda took the corner that Galton headed into the upper right corner.
Hofstra had more chances to add to its lead, but goalkeeper
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) made three saves to keep it at 1-0. In the 21st minute,
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ) and
Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) combined on a give-and-go and Lewis put it home to tie the game for her first of the season.
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) put the Knights ahead early in the second half 2-1 when she headed home a service from
Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) in the 47th minute. Tice has scored in back-to-back games for the Knights.
Hofstra answered less than two minutes later when Kristin Desmond headed home a service from Mallory Ullrich to tie the game. The Pride took the lead in the 54th minute after Molleda bent in a free kick from 23 yards out into the right corner. Hofstra got the free kick from a yellow card being given to a Knights' defender.
Noelle Picone (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial ) got the Knights back to level in the 72nd minute when she slotted home a pass from
Nikki Keicher (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow). The assist was Keicher's first career point.
Galton scored the gamewinner for Hofstra when she dribbled in from 40 yards out and beat Burr to the upper right corner.
Teepe continued, "The second half was back and forth. Both teams had quality chances in the second half. At any point either team could have gone up two."
Burr finished with 11 saves on the afternoon, which is a career-best.
Fairleigh Dickinson will travel to Monmouth on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game in West Long Branch, New Jersey. The game will be aired on ESPN3.
