Box Score 2 HACKENSACK, N.J. –
Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) and
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) each hurled a complete game shutout of Northeast Conference rival Mount St. Mary's and the Fairleigh Dickinson softball team improved to 11-17 (7-5 NEC) after two 3-0 victories on Saturday. The Mountaineers fall to 6-26 (1-9 overall) with the losses.
"Today saw two outstanding pitching performances by Loren and Megan," Head Coach
Candi Letts said, "Maddy Wilen helped them set up Mount hitters and those two kept them off-balance all day. We had enough offense to get these two important wins."
Game one included no earned runs as all three of FDU's runs came on plays involving an error.
Madelaine Wilen (Bakerfield, Calif./Ridgeview High School) doubled to lead off the fourth inning and two batters later,
Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School) sacrificed Wilen and Portesi over to second and third with just one out.
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido), with two outs, reached on an error and both runners scored.
Lerma again reached on an error and Portesi was able to score an insurance run, 3-0.
Stavrou was in control throughout, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out five. The junior improves to 3-7 on the season with the win, while Danni Cummings, who also went the distance and allowed just four hits and no walks, falls to 3-8.
Marian Ruf and Reiner each had a shutout going through six innings in game two but Ruf allowed three runs in the final frame as the Knights finished with the doubleheader sweep.
Reiner allowed four hits, three walks, and struck out seven, moving to 8-6 on the season with her fourth shutout of the season, a new single season school record. Ruf gave up seven hits and one walk while punching out nine.
Sophomore
Stephanie Collins (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) delivered the go-ahead run with a one-out RBI single, scoring
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), and scored on Wilen's home run a batter later to make it two identical 3-0 scorelines.
The home run is Wilen's seventh of the season, a career-best, and ties the all-time program record with 16 for her career. The junior backstop finished the day going 5-for-7 to up her season average to a blistering .411.
The Knights are at Saint Peter's on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m., before hosting their final two NEC doubleheaders next weekend, including Senior Day on Sunday.
