Box Score 2 HACKENSACK, N.J. –
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) earned her first shutout of the season as the Fairleigh Dickinson softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Manhattan College on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights' record moves to 9-17 (5-5 NEC) with the split, while the Jaspers' record now sits at 18-10 (8-0 MAAC) overall.
The junior hurler was lights out in game one, allowing two singles in the opening frame and one in the fourth plus two walks, over seven complete innings with six strikeouts. Stavrou, who owns FDU's all-time lowest era in a single season (1.41), improves to 2-7 on the season.
Stavrou received all the run support she'd need in the fourth inning when
Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) hit her second double in two at-bats and scoring
Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School). FDU tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth when
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) launched her fifth home run of the season, a two-run jack, and
Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley High School) smacked a solo shot, her third in three straight games, right behind her to finish the contest at 4-0.
Manhattan's Amy Bright allowed just one earned run in her four innings of work, allowing three hits and no walks, while striking out six, but fell to 10-5 on the season.
Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) started game two and was immediately staked with a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Dorado tallied her third double of the day to score Nieves and Slye added a RBI double down the left field line.
After another scoreless inning,
Madelaine Wilen (Bakerfield, Calif./Ridgeview High School) crushed her sixth home run of the season to left field to make it 3-0 to the hosts. Wilen has now tied her career-best mark of six in a single campaign and the long ball was the 15th of her career, good for third all-time in program history.
The Jaspers got one back on an Elena Bowman sacrifice fly to score Rachael Mumma in the third. Lopez allowed two walks in the frame to make it four free bases in three innings.
Emma Deluca (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township High School) continued her solid week with a RBI double in the fourth to score her pitcher, 4-1, but Manhattan grabbed two back in the next frame when Stephanie Reinhardt led off with a home run and Mumma's RBI single scored Anna Crowley.
Bowman, one of the nation's top hitters, smacked a solo shot to lead off the fifth and tie the game up at 4-4. Lopez walked her next two batters and Reinhardt's single up the middle scored Briana Matazinsky. Crowley popped out, Madison Bailey ripped a RBI single to left, Mumma grounded out, and Ross walked to put two on with two outs. Mickayla Romero's single to center scored both runners but she was tagged out advancing to second to end the inning. The Jaspers now led 8-4.
Wilen's 30th career double scored Slye and the Knights cut the deficit to three but Matazinsky enter the game to replace Erin Hamm and she got out of a jam.
Stavrou enter the game for Lopez in the sixth and allowed a full count solo home run to Bowman, her second of the game, to push the lead to four. She'd allow one more single over her two innings but no runs.
Manhattan took game two, 9-5, to split the doubleheader. Hamm earned her first win of the season and Matazinsky tallied her first save. Lopez dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
Wilen and Lerma each notched two hits and five other Knights got one hit.
