Lukosius Wins Individual Title; No. 2 Knights Take Team Title at Garden States

HOWELL, N.J. - Sophomore Karsyn Lukosius (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) claimed the individual title and No. 2 Fairleigh Dickinson claimed the team title at the Garden State Championships this past weekend.

The Knights claimed the team title via total pin fall over the four games on Sunday. The Knights topped Monmouth, who was 4-0, by 37 pins over the four matches (4,633-4,596).

In the team event on Sunday-where the teams played traditional team games, Fairleigh Dickinson went 3-1 with wins over New Jersey City, Saint Peter's and Felician. The Knights dropped their match against host No. 22 Monmouth.

The No. 2 Knights opened Sunday with an 857-701 win over New Jersey City. Nicolette Sarin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township High School) led the way with a 201. Hannon was second in pin fall with a 173.

In match two of the day. Fairleigh Dickinson topped the Peacocks of Saint Peter's by the score of 975-838. Brown has a 237, high score of the day for the Knights, to lead the way. Lukosius also broke 200 with a 206.

Monmouth gave Fairleigh Dickinson its only loss of the day with a 954-898 win. The No. 22 Hawks got a 235 from Valerie Bermudez and three other bowlers topped 188. Hannon was the bowler for the Knights with a 191.

The Knights concluded the day with a 981-788 win over Felician. Morgan Brown (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford), who along with Hannon were named to the tournament's All-Star team, posted a 235. Hannon had a 222 and Lukosius posted a 217.

Overall, the Knights had five bowlers in the top 12 of the individual standings; Brown (2nd), Hannon (3rd), Lukosius (7th), Sarin (8th) and Amy Caruso (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) (12th).

Fairleigh Dickinson will not compete again until 2016 when they travel down to Laurel, Maryland for the Bowie State Invitational on January 15-17.

HOWELL, N.J. - Sophomore Karsyn Lukosius (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) topped Melanie Hannon (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) to claim the individual title on the first day of the Garden State Championships in Howell, New Jersey.

Lukosius topped her teammate by a score of 217-204.

The starting field of 45 entrants was trimmed to 24 after a four-game qualifying round of total pin fall. The Knights had nine of their 11 players qualify. Rebecca Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate) was the number one qualifier with a four-game total of 840, featured a 253. Lukosius was third (811), Melanie Hannon (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) fourth (800), Morgan Brown (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) fifth, Nicolette Sarin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township High School) sixth, Amy Caruso (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) was 12th, Sydney Schelfo was 16th, Morgan Walsh (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) and Amanda Schilling (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) qualified 21st and 22nd respectively.

After two more games, the field was trimmed again, this time to the top eight that would make up the semifinals. Five Knights advanced; Lukosius, Hannon, Fischer, Brown and Sarin.

The players were then paired for a two-game head-to-head match to determine the stepladder finals. Lukosius, Hannon and Fischer all won and advanced for the Knights; Brown was defeated by Monmouth's Jessica Nannemann.

In a stepladder final, the top two seeds get a bye and the number three and four seeds play. Fischer topped Nannermann in a single game, 215-191. Fischer then faced Hannon for the right to play Lukosius in the finals. Hannon advanced via a 211-180 win. Fischer finished in third.
