Box Score NEWARK, Del. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team fell to the University of Delaware in the final second on Tuesday night at Acierno Arena. The Blue Hens (2-1) and Knights (1-4) traded the lead six times in the second half before Delaware hit a free throw with nine tenths of a second remaining to earn a 73-72 victory.
With less than a second left to play and the game tied 72-72, Delaware's Cazmon Hayes setup for a three in the corner. Sophomore
Marques Townes (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph (Metuchen)), challenging the shot, was called for a foul that sent Cazmon to the line for three free throws. Cazmon missed the first two, but connected on the third to give the Blue Hens a 73-72 lead.
"I am really, really proud of our effort and road toughness tonight - we were just one play away from winning," head coach
Greg Herenda said after the game. "Stephan played great - he controlled the game for us and Earl Potts is turning into a very difficult player to guard. They were both really good tonight."
FDU opened the second half with a strong 12-6 run to tie the game at 41-41. From that point the teams would trade baskets and the lead over the remaining 16 minutes.
FDU's last lead of the game came with 3:08 left to play as freshman
Mike Holloway (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick ) dropped in a short jumper. Delaware tied the game on the ensuing possession and then grabbed a 70-68 lead on their next trip down the court.
With 1:28 left to play freshman
Darnell Edge (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed the ball up the court finding Townes for a fast break layup to tie the game.
A pair of free throws, on separate possessions, gave the Blue Hens a 72-70 advantage, but sophomore
Stephan Jiggetts (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) knocked down two free throws with nine seconds left to once again tie the score.
The Knights outscored the Blue Hens 43-36 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the 37-29 halftime deficit.
The Knights grabbed an early lead in the first half, but surrendered the lead to the Blue Hens at the 10:09 mark.
Jiggetts finished with a career-high 22 points. Potts matched his career-high with 21 points. Potts also grabbed nine rebounds in the game.
The Knights connected on 34.8% (8-of-23) of their three point attempts and were 44.1% (26-of-59) from the floor. Delaware was 42.4% (25-of-59) from the field and 28.6% (6-of-21) from long range. The Blue Hens attempted 34 free throws, but made just 17 (50%), while FDU was 12-of-21 at the line.
Delaware also held a 48-33 advantage on the boards, including 17 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points.
Townes finished with nine points, six rebounds and six assists.
Herenda added, "This team gets better every day in practice and tonight you could literally see them mature in front of you. We were just one play away but we are getting there."
The Knights will host Saint Peter's on Saturday, November 28 at 2 p.m.
