Women's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Loss to No. 9 Rutgers in NCAA First Round

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 9 Rutgers' Rachel Cole struck with four seconds remaining in the first half to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead and that turned out to be the difference as the second seeded Scarlet Knights turned in their 16th shutout of the season and beat Fairleigh Dickinson 1-0 on Friday night.

The goal was Cole's fourth of the season. Tori Prager had the assist.

Fairleigh Dickinson's (16-6) 12-game winning was snapped with the 1-0 loss. The Knights' last loss came to rv/19 St. John's back on September 20. It is the third time this season that Knights have been shutout.

Jessi Reinhardt (Friedberg, Germany/Burggymansium) played in a cross to Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central) inside the box in the first minute that careened around and out for a FDU corner. Rutgers (17-3-2), who will play the winner of Hofstra/Georgetown, cleared the ensuing corner. Hoekstra had a chance later on in the first half off a drop pass from Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) but her shot from the top of the box went over the crossbar.

Rutgers was able to generate more chances than the Knights throughout the evening. The Scarlet Knights held a 21-7 shot advantage, including a 12-3 lead in the opening 45 minutes.

Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) made 11 saves on the night. The senior made a good save in the first going to ground on Rutgers' Katelyn Walters to keep the game scoreless at the time.

In the 61st minute, Burr made a series of saves off a series of Rutgers' corners. Burr first leaped to her right and punched the ball out for a corner; then on the ensuing corner Burr punched the cross clear. Rutgers earned another corner and Burr makes a save off a header going to her left to keep Fairleigh Dickinson down 1-0.

Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) made a bid to tie the game on a header off a corner but it went high. Katey Arathoon (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's) put the only shot for the Knights on goal in the 75th minute with a shot from distance but it was an easy save for Casey Murphy.

In the final 10 minutes, the Knights were unable to create a chance to the tie the game.

The Knights set a record for wins with their 16 this season. They also made the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
