Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener to #11/9 Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team fell to #11/9 Villanova on Friday night by a score of 91-54.  The Knights were led by a game-high 21 points from sophomore Darian Anderson (Washington, D.C./St. John's College ).  Villanova had a balanced offensive attack with five players in double figures.

Villanova shot 46.4% (32-of-69) from the floor and held a 53-37 advantage on the glass to control the game.

"We played a team that was playing at a different level tonight," head coach Greg Herenda said after the game.  "Villanova plays a great brand of basketball - they guard well rebound great and are so efficient offensively."

"This game will prove beneficial to us in the future.  For our guys to play in this kind of environment, against a top ten team is a special experience. It hurts tonight but it will help us over the long haul."

The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead before sophomore Marques Townes (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph (Metuchen)) sank a layup with 16:13 left in the first half.   Villanova did not trail at any point during the game and led by double-digits for the final 32:24 of regulation.

The Knights trailed 50-22 at the half with Villanova hitting on 47.1% of their attempts from the floor.  The Wildcats were also 14-of-17 at the free throw line in the period.

Anderson scored 10 points in the first half on 4-of-11 shooting, while Townes contributed four points and three steals.

Anderson was four-of-five shooting in the second half to finish the day 8-of-16 from the field.  He was also five-of-eight from behind the arc.

Sophomore Earl Potts Jr. (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding ) fell just short of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds in 22 minutes of action.  Potts was six-of-six at the free throw line helping the Knights to a 72.2% (13-of-18) performance at the stripe.

Townes finished with seven points and three steals.

All 13 Knights saw action in the contest, including all six freshmen who played their first collegiate game.

"Darian was great tonight - he played with great confidence and composure. I told my guys we have to feel the pain tonight but use this game to learn for the future," Herenda added.

The Knights return to action on Monday, November 16 against FDU Florham.  FDU will also host Army West Point on Wednesday, November 18.  Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts at Stratis Arena inside the Rothman Center.
