Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Behind the strength of sophomore
Enver Caymaz (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes)'s first two goals of the season, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team snapped a five-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over Yale on Tuesday night at Reese Stadium. With the victory, the Knights improve to 2-7-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-6-2 overall.
Caymaz deposited his first score of the season in the 14th minute after a trio of dekes led him to the back of the net with a shot from the top of the box that traveled just inside the post for the early 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes before halftime, freshman
Itai Erez (Petah Tikva, Israel /Ahad Ha'am) took control of the ball after a Yale turnover for a 2-on-1 situation, where he found fellow classmate
Leo Saiti (Teaneck N.J./Teaneck) on the outside, who banged in his first career goal to extend the advantage to 2-0. The goal proved to be the game winner for FDU.
The lead ballooned to 3-0 in the 72nd minute, after senior
Miguel Escobar (Medellin, Columbia/The Columbus School) sailed a long pass to Caymaz, who raced past the Bulldogs' defense for the goal.
Yale would score in the 84th minute when Lukas Czinger's shot was blocked by an FDU defender and deflected to Mitch Wagner, who scored to make it 3-1, but it was too little too late for the Bulldogs.
The Knights outshot Yale, 20-9, including 11-5 in the first half and 9-4 over the final 45 minutes. Nine shots came on goal, with Caymaz firing a team-high four.
Freshman
Matthew Weigner (Warrington, Pa/Central Bucks South) collected his second career victory between the pipes after making two saves. The Bulldogs' Ryan Simpson took the loss in goal despite making four saves in the first half. He was replaced by Blake Brown, who produced two stops in the second stanza.
FDU will now have a long layoff before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 10 when it welcomes Saint Francis U for the start of Northeast Conference play. Kickoff at University Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
