W.Volleyball Finishes Play at Friar Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team would finish play at the 10th annual Friar Classic on Saturday 1-2, bringing the team to 2-9 on the season. The Knights would start the day by taking on host Providence, falling to them in four sets by scores of 25-20, 25-27, 19-25 and 15-25. FDU would return to action to face Morgan state later in the afternoon, but would fall to then also by scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-21.

The match would start with the Friars jumping out to an early lead of 5-3. The Knights would retaliate by taking the next two points tying the score of the set at 5-5. The two teams would tie the score two more times, at 6 and 9 points, before two attack errors by Providence would give the Knights the lead that they would not relinquish. The closest that the Friars would get would be two points at the 23-20 mark, but a kill by sophomore Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) , and freshman Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) would give FDU the first match.

The Knights would start the second set by taking the first four points with a kill by freshman Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota).? The set would turn into a tough battle with the teams tying the score seven more times throughout the set, at 7, 12, 19, 20, 23, and 25. Providence's Abbie Trzeciak would close the set with two final kills, giving the Friars the first win of the match.

The third set would start with FDU and Providence exchanging the lead five times until a kill by Trzeciak would send the Friars on a six-point run giving them a 19-13 lead.? The Knights would retaliate late in the set going on a five-point run which included two kills by Laton, and a kill by freshman Madisen Phipps (Boise, Idaho/Timberline), bring the score to 22-19. Providence would then go on a three-point run to finish the set, putting them up 2-1 in the match.

Trailing 3-0 early in the fourth set, FDU would go on to take four of the next six points that are scored bringing it within one point at 5-4. The closest that the Knights would come to Providence was at 13-9, which included a kill by O'Sullivan and two attack errors from the Friars. Providence would go on to close set on a 6-3 point run sealing the match 3-1.

O'Sullivan would record her third double-double of the season with a team-leading 13 kills and 14 digs, joining her was junior Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) who had her first double-double of the season with 33 assists and 14 digs.? Laton would also have double digit kills recording 11, along with senior Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and junior Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) who recorded 12 and 18 digs, respectively

The second match of the day would have FDU going up against Morgan State, with the win the Bears would move to 5-5 on the season.

After falling early to 5-1 the knights would make a comeback tying the score at 7-7 with kills by O'Sullivan, Laton and two kills from senior Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers). The teams would tie the score six more times with the final tie coming at 19-19. Morgan State would then go on a five-point run bringing the score to 24-19, but a miss serve from FDU would give the Bears the final point of the set.

The second set would start with the teams exchanging points before the Knights would go on a four point run giving them the lead 7-6 with kills from Addi and Lolland. The teams would exchange the lead three more time before Morgan State would go on a seven-point run giving them a 20-14 lead. FDU would bring to score as close as 19-24 before falling on a kill by the Bears Evely Macedo.

The final set would have the Knights out to a quick 6-4 lead before Morgan State would go on a 9-2 run bringing the score to 13-8. FDU would come back and go on a 6-1 point run with two kills by Lolland along with a kill by junior Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) bring the score to 18-17. This would be the closest that the Knights would get as the Bears would finish the match on a 5-3 point run with two attack errors from Morgan State.

Hong would record a squad-leading 13 digs in the game. Butler would have 24 assists to set up Lollands career high six kills. Hong and O'Sullivan would also be named to the Friar Classic All-Tournament team.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday Sept. 17, and will make their home debut in Stratis Arena when they host NJIT, with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
