Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team won its second match of the season after opening play on Friday at the 10th annual Friar Classic, hosted by Providence. The Knights, now 2-7 on the season, rallied from two sets down to defeat Quinnipiac, 3-2. The Bobcats won the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-19, before FDU won the final three sets, 25-17, 25-17 and 15-7. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 1-7 overall.
FDU started off the match with a service ace from junior
Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), as the Knights took an early 3-0. FDU held the advantage until Quinnipiac knotted the score at 6-6 on a Knights' error. The Bobcats would go on a three-point run, which would include two attack errors from FDU, to take a 13-9 lead that they would not give up for the rest of the match. The Knights cut the deficit to one on three different occasions, with the last coming at 24-23, but a kill from Quinnipiac's Allison Leigh would close the opening set with a score of 25-23.
In the second set, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 11-3 lead, but a service error would switch the momentum and send the Knights on a 5-1 run, which would include kills from senior
Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) and freshman
Carly O'Sullivan (Bogota, N.J./Bogota), slicing the deficit to 12-8. Quinnipiac answered and extended its lead back to seven points for most of the set. FDU got as close as 23-19 after a kill from O'Sullivan but fell short, 25-19.
Trailing 4-1 early in the third set, the Knights started a 12-3 spurt triggered by O'Sullivan's kill, before another O'Sullivan kill capped the run to give FDU a 13-7 lead. After Quinnipiac scored the next two points, the Knights would go on another tear, with kills from O'Sullivan, Addi, freshman
Alex Lolland (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) and sophomore
Caroline Laton (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), which increased the advantage to 23-12. FDU then claimed the set on a block-assist from Addi and junior
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights).
The Knights started the fourth set by scoring the first seven points and 12 of the first 13 to jump out to a 12-1 lead, with junior
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) recording three service aces, and O'Sullivan recording three kills. Quinnipiac attempted to bring the set back into reach by going on a five-point run, which trimmed the deficit to 23-16. However, an attack error would swing the momentum back towards FDU, and a kill by Gibbons would give the Knights the set to send the match into a fifth set.
In the final winner-takes-all set, FDU showed no mercy by coming out with a strong 5-1 run, with kills by Addi and freshman
Taylor Wyckoff (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont). The Knights would then use an 8-1 spurt to increase their advantage to 14-4 on kills from Laton, Lolland and Gibbons. The Bobcats would try and come back, but a kill by Addi would seal the deal to clinch the victory for FDU.
O'Sullivan collected her second double-double of the season, after recording a season-high 15 kills and 13 digs. Joining her in the double-digit column was senior
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and Lostetter, as the duo registered 20 and 16 digs, respectively. Butler manufactured a great night setting up the offense with 32 assists, and freshman
Josephine Gallagher (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) chipped in a career-high 10 assists on the night.
The Knights return to action Saturday at the 10th annual Friar Classic, where they will be taking on host Providence at 10:30 a.m. and Morgan State at 2:30 p.m.
