Box Score Dover, Del. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team shut out Delaware State, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon behind goals from
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) and
Connie Lewis (Outer Cove, Newfoundland/Gonzaga ). With the victory, the Knights improve to 3-1 on the season while the Hornets fall to 0-4.
"It was a positive day in the sense that we were successful against a team that was very compact at the back," head coach
Eric Teepe said, "We knocked the ball around and got a few quality goals in the first half."
Sophomore Lewis is already building on her 2013 Northeast Conference All-Rookie campaign with four goals over her last three matches, two coming today in the first 30 minutes.
"Connie has really been aggressive and attacking players. In every single game this season, she's created at least several scoring opportunities," Teepe said.
Lewis opened the scoring in the 13th minute after being fed by
Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ), making a move past a defender, and chipping over Hornets senior goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky.
Junior forward Tice added FDU's second less than three minutes later with an assist from Lewis. Fifteen minutes before halftime, co-captain
Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) again fed Lewis in for her second of the game and fourth of the season.
The two assists are the co-captain's seventh and eighth of her career and move her into a tie for fifth most in program history, along with current teammate
Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy).
The Knights enjoyed the majority of chances in Sunday's clash and outshot Delaware State, 18-2. Three FDU players had at least three shots, including a game-high five for Lewis.
"Going forward, that's going to be a part of the growth of our team: stay within our game and not letting the game be dictated by the opposite team or other demands of the game," Teepe said.
FDU is back in Teaneck on Friday afternoon for the 2014 home opener against Saint Peter's. Kickoff from University Stadium is slated for 5:30 p.m. The match will be the first of a doubleheader along with the men's soccer team's home opener.
