Softball Rallies Late in Game Two to Sweep Wagner

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Behind two complete-game efforts from junior Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) and two home runs, four hits and four RBI from sophomore Madelaine Wilen (Bakerfield, Calif./Ridgeview High School) in the home finale, the Fairleigh Dickinson softball team recorded a much-needed Northeast Conference sweep of Wagner on Sunday at the FDU Softball Field. The Knights won the opener, 5-2, before rallying for three runs in the sixth to take the nightcap, 3-2. With the split, FDU improves to 17-19 (7-5 NEC), while the Seahawks fall to 19-23 (6-8 NEC) overall.

In the opener, Reiner (12-7) pitched a shutout through the first six innings before yielding back-to-back home runs to begin the seventh. However, the round-trippers did not faze the Knights' ace, who limited Wagner to just two earned runs on five hits while walking none and striking out eight en route to her 14th complete game of the season. After allowing a lead-off double to start the game, Reiner retired the next 12 batters she faced and 17 of 18.

The FDU offense pounded out 12 hits in the game and was led by Wilen, who went 3-for-4, including her fourth home run of the season, three RBI and two runs. Juniors Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) and Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School) also collected three hits, as the first four batters in the lineup went a combined 9-for-16 with three RBI and three runs.

The Knights started the scoring in the bottom of the first when they loaded the bases with one out. Junior Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard)'s RBI sacrifice fly plated Wilen to give FDU an early 1-0 lead.

Wilen then drove home redshirt senior Liz Woidt (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) in the bottom of the second with a clutch two-out RBI double to extend the lead to 2-0.

Two-out clutching hitting proved to be the difference in the bottom of the fifth for the Knights when freshman Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) delivered an RBI single to score Zamudio, which turned out to be the game-winning hit while increasing the advantage to 3-0.

Wilen put the contest away in the bottom of the sixth with her two-run homer over the center field fence. Freshman Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) scored on the play to give FDU a 5-0 lead.

McKaleigh Goodale went the distance for the Seahawks in the loss. The Knights roughed her up for five runs, four earned, on 12 hits, while she walked one and struck out three. Brenda Bott led the Wagner offense with two hits, including a home run in the final inning.

Reiner got the nod in the circle for game two and allowed single runs in the fourth and sixth innings that gave the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.

Heading into the bottom half of the inning, FDU had only registered two hits off Wagner starter Samantha Bedker. But that would change in the frame, as Wilen hit the first pitch of the inning over the left-center field fence to slice the deficit in half with her fifth home run of the season. After a groundout, Zamudio walked on four pitches and Nieves singled to place runners on the corners, setting up Lerma, who just missed a grand slam, as she singled off the right-center field fence to plate Zamudio and knot the game at 2-2.

Woidt then stepped to the plate and made her senior day memorable with a first-pitch RBI sacrifice fly to left field that scored Nieves for the game-winning run.

Reiner would retire the Seahawks in order in the top of the seventh to clinch the sweep for the Knights. Reiner (13-7) yielded two earned runs on four hits, walked one and struck out nine in her 15th complete game of the season.

Bedker also went the distance and allowed three earned runs on five hits to go along with two walks and four strikeouts in the loss.

Freshman Alex Portesi (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo) collected two of the five FDU hits in the contest. Kelsey Parker led Wagner with two hits, two RBI and a run.

The Knights will step out of conference play on Wednesday, April 30 when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. to take on Iona in a doubleheader. Game one's first pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
