Box Score TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team extended its winning streak to three games after defeating Iona, 4-3, on Wednesday at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. With the victory, the Knights improve to 10-21 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 6-23 overall.
Junior
Brendan Butler (W. Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (2-4) earned the victory after yielding three earned runs on five hits in 6.2 innings while walking three and striking out four. Fellow classmate
Eric Snyder (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) faced the minimum over the final 1.1 innings to record his fourth save of the season and the 20th of his career.
Sophomores
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) and
Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) and freshman
Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) each had two hits to lead FDU's nine-hit performance, with Brennan and McCann each collecting a RBI.
Iona took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Nick Hogan's one-out RBI single, before Butler was able to limit the damage with an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.
The Knights took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with two runs to go in front, 2-1. Freshman
Zach Tondi (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Bergen County Technical) drove home Brennan with the first run on a RBI groundout to second base, before redshirt sophomore
Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) followed with a RBI double that plated junior
Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North).
Brennan extended the advantage to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, as junior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) scored on his one-out RBI double that also advanced Sprague to third base. But FDU was unable to tack on in the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, McCann executed a squeeze to score Tondi with one out to push the lead to 4-1, which proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Gaels scored a pair of two-out runs in the top of the seventh to trim the deficit to 4-3, but the Knights' bullpen retired seven of the final eight batters of the game to clinch the victory.
Iona's Jake Kurz was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings while walking two and fanning two. Alex Beckett registered two of the Gaels' six hits, scored twice and drove home a run to lead the offense.
