Box Score

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped the opening contest of its four-game Northeast Conference set with Wagner, 12-5, on Friday at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 6-20 (3-2 NEC) on the season, while the Knights fall to 6-16 (0-5 NEC) overall.

Wagner nearly scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first after scoring five times off FDU starter Nick Cuono (Hawthorne, N.J./Montvale Saint Joseph ). The Seahawks would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 7-0.

FDU finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when freshman Matt McCann (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro ) scored to make it 7-1 when he scored on the second baseman's throwing error on junior Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North)'s infield single with two outs.

But Wagner would respond with two runs in the bottom of the frame before adding three more in the bottom of the seventh for a 12-1 lead.

Moonan later drove home McCann with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the eighth and would score three more times in the top of the ninth to make the final score 12-5.

Cuono (1-3) lasted only 4.2 innings in the loss. The sophomore allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits, walked three and struck out none. Ryan Casey limited the Knights to only one unearned run on six hits in the victory. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

McCann led the 11-hit attack with two hits, two runs and his fifth stolen base. Sophomore Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park), redshirt sophomore Patrick McClure (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius ) and sophomore Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) also had two hits.

The Seahawks pounded out 17 hits and were led by Jason Gordon, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Shaun Flynn scored four times.

The two sides will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Both contests will be seven innings in length.
