Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team dropped its first two games of the Mustang Classic to the host team Cal Poly, 6-0, before falling to Santa Clara by the same score on Friday night at Bob Janssen Field. With the victories, the Mustangs and Broncos improve to 9-9 and 2-12, respectively on the year, while the Knights fall to 3-4 overall.

FDU fell in their opening contest to Cal Poly, as Mustangs' pitcher Sierra Hyland threw a one-hitter against the Knights, throwing a complete game shutout while allowing only two base runners and striking out seven

"We played a good Cal Poly team." Head Coach Candi Letts said. "We just came up short on getting clutch hits."

Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) (2-1) was charged with the loss for FDU after tossing 4.1 innings and allowing six hits, four earned runs and striking out four. Freshmen Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) relieved Reiner, throwing 1.2 innings, and yielding her first runs of the season (none earned) on two hits and three walks.

Hyland beat the Knights in the circle and in the batter's box, breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single down the left-field line to score Lauren Moreno. The Mustangs scored another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Bryana West.

Cal Poly would add two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to cruise to the victory.

The Knights dropped the nightcap game to Santa Clara. Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) started for the Knights and was up against the Broncos' Jessica Turner in a pitchers' duel for the better half of the game.

Stavrou (0-2) was charged with the loss after tossing 6.1 innings and allowing five hits and four earned runs while walking two. Letts said she was impressed with Stavrou's pitching performance.Turner was credited with the win after throwing 5.2 innings, only allowing three hits and walking two.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Jordan Newell homered over the left-center field fence to put the Santa Clara ahead, 1-0. The Broncos then exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

FDU only managed three hits in the second game but had multiple chances to score, leaving six players in scoring position throughout the contest.

"We stranded too many runners in scoring position," Letts said. "We are working through our process, and with every pitch, we get better and gain more information on how to get better."

The Knights will return to action on Saturday at the Mustangs Classic and will face Santa Clara for a second time at 2:30 p.m., before taking on Sacramento State at 10 p.m.
