RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Manhattan at Gaelic Field on Thursday. The Jaspers won the opener, 2-1, before taking the nightcap, 5-0. With the victories, Manhattan improves to 6-14 on the season, while the Knights fall to 7-12 overall.

In the first game, the Jaspers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Elena Bowman knocked a solo home run over the left-field fence.

But in the top of the sixth, junior Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) knotted the game at 1-1 when she doubled home fellow classmate Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) with two outs.

However, in the bottom of the frame, starting pitcher Kate Bowen helped herself out with a solo home run over the right-field fence, which proved to be the game winner. FDU was able to get the tying run to second base with two outs in the top of the seventh but failed to score.

Junior Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) (5-3) was charged with a tough-luck loss for the Knights. She went the distance for the fifth time this season and tied a season high in strikeouts with 11 and did not walk a batter while yielding only three hits.

Bowen also tossed a complete game, allowing only one earned run on four hits to go along with one walk and three strikeouts en route to picking up the victory for Manhattan

In game two, the Jaspers broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Amanda Paxson hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence, before Jenn Vazauez followed with a solo shot to give Manhattan back-to-back home runs and a 3-0 lead.

Vazquez then put the game away with her second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth.

FDU managed only three hits in the contest off Jaspers' starter Amy Bright, who went the distance while striking out four and walking two.

Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) (0-3) was charged with the loss after lasting 2+ innings, where she allowed three earned runs on six hits. Freshman Cheryl Lopez (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) pitched the final four innings and yielded two runs, one earned, on just two hits and recorded two strikeouts.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they begin Northeast Conference play with a doubleheader at the FDU Softball Field, with first pitch for game one slated for 1 p.m.
