Baseball Battles in 3-1 Loss at #22 Seton Hall

Box Score

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team was on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel against #22 Seton Hall on Friday, dropping a hard-fought 3-1 decision to the Pirates at Owen T. Carroll Field in the series opener. With the victory, Seton Hall improves to 13-4 on the season, while the Knights see their win streak end at three and fall to 6-8 overall.

With two outs in the sixth, sophomore Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) doubled home fellow classmate Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) to tie the game at 1-1, but Sprague was gunned down at third to end the inning after trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

In the bottom of the frame, freshman starter Joe Flack (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) retired the first batter before yielding back-to-back singles, which resulted in sophomore Nick Cuono (Hawthorne, N.J./Montvale Saint Joseph ) coming in relief. After a stolen base placed runners and second and third, Chris Seldon came through for the Pirates with a two-run single up the middle, which proved to be the game winner.

FDU would put a runner in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings but could not do any damage against Seton Hall ace Josh Prevost, who moved to 6-0 on the season after tossing his third complete game. He limited the Knights to only one earned run on four hits, walked one and struck out five.

Flack (0-2) was tagged with the loss. The righty allowed three earned runs on seven hits and walked two in 5.1 innings of work. Cuono tossed the final 2.2 innings and limited the Pirates to only one hit while recording one strikeout. Zach Weigel and Taylor Boyd each had two hits to pace Seton Hall's offense.

The two sides will resume their series on Saturday at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
