SAN DIEGO -- The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team split its pair of contests on Saturday in the USD Tournament I at the USD Softball Complex. Behind junior
Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall)'s strong pitching performance in the opener, the Knights defeated Seattle, 3-1, before falling in the nightcap, 6-0, to Weber State. FDU is now 6-10 on the season.
Against the Redhawks, Reiner (4-2) went the distance, striking out 11 while allowing one earned run on eight hits. Seattle's Lindsay Davis also went the distance, yielding three unearned runs on seven hits.
Neither side scored over the first three innings, but the Redhawks struck first in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Mandle Sugita
The Knights' offense woke up after a long layoff and scored three runs in the top of the sixth off of Davis. The inning began with freshman
Alex Portesi (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo) reaching on an error and advancing to second on junior
Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School)' sacrifice bunt. Junior
Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) then hit a single up the middle to score Portesi and tie the game at 1-1.
After junior
Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) reached on a fielder's choice, freshman
Madison Lerma (Escondido, Calif./Escondido) found the right-center field gap to score Zamudio on the RBI double for the eventual game-winning hit. FDU capped off its scoring when redshirt senior
Liz Woidt (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) reached on an error to score Lerma.
Nieves paced the offense with a 2-for-3 effort, with Dorado, Lerma and Woidt all collecting one RBI.
Isabella Geronimo led Seattle by going 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot, while Lisa Maulden added two hits.
The Knights then faced the Wildcats for the second time in the tournament and once again, could not get anything going offensively, as FDU managed only two hits in the contest.
Weber State scored twice in the bottom of the first, before putting the game away with four run in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the victory.
Lerma (1-2) was charged with the loss after failing to record an out in the first inning, despite allowing two unearned runs on only one hit. Sophomore
Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) pitched the final 6.0 innings, yielding four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out two and walking none.
MaCauley Flint struck out 11 and walked three in the complete-game shutout for the Wildcats. Brooke Silva and Sara Hingsberger each had two hits, combining for half of their team's total. Six different players scored a run and collected an RBI for Weber State.
The Knights will conclude their California trip on Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. contest against San Diego.
