Snyder Becomes All-Time Saves Leader in 7-5 Victory Over Lehigh

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Eric Snyder (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) became the all-time saves  leader of the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball program on Sunday after he pitched the final 1.1 innings to nail down the Knights' first victory of the season, 7-5, over Lehigh at Wilson Field in the team's final contest of the Davidson Tournament. With the victory, FDU improves to 1-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 1-2 overall.

Snyder's first save of the season gives him 17 for his career, moving him ahead of Spencer Kelly (2008-11). The junior co-captain recorded the final out of the eighth inning and struck out two batters in the ninth before sealing the win.

"We played terrific team baseball today – sac bunts, moving runners over and sac flies," Head Coach Gary Puccio said. "It was an impressive team effort. And to get (Eric) Snyder the save record was a great bonus."

The Knights, who lead 3-0 after three innings, had to rally from a 4-3 deficit after the Mountain Hawks scored four times in the top of the fourth.

FDU regained the advantage for good in the bottom of the sixth with three runs. With no outs, both junior Jose DeLeon (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) and sophomore Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) scored the tying and go ahead runs on a throwing error from the pitcher after sophomore Ryan Brennan (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville)'s fielder's choice, giving the Knights a 5-4 lead.

Freshman Zach Tondi (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Bergen County Technical) then gave FDU a big insurance run with a one-out RBI single down the left-field line to plate Brennan and increase the lead to 6-4. The hit proved to be the game winner for the Knights.

Junior Joe Borelli (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan ) (2-0) picked up the victory in relief of freshman starter Joe Flack (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys). Borelli came into the game with runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth and recorded the final two outs despite giving up the go ahead two-out-two-run double for Lehigh in the frame. He faced 11 batters in 2.2 innings of work and scattered four hits.

Junior Anthony Calise (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) replaced Borelli in the seventh and pitched a scoreless frame before yielding to fellow classmate Yonah Perline (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Dominic), who recorded one strikeout in his 0.2 innings of work in the eighth.

Sophomore John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), who started the rally in the sixth inning with a single before being pulled for pinch runner DeLeon, went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Tondi added two hits and one RBI. Overall, the Knights collected eight safeties.

Brandon Kulp was charged with the loss for the Mountain Hawks on the bump, as the Knights scored three runs on three hits in his 2.1 innings of relief work.

Mike Garzillo led Lehigh's 10-hit attack with two hits and two RBI. John Elson also had two hits, while Connor Donovan drove home two.

FDU will head west to Kentucky next weekend for a three-game set at Morehead State in Morehead, Ky. Game one is slated for Friday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m.
