W. Soccer Rallies to Defeat LIU Brooklyn, 2-1

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team defeated LIU Brooklyn, 2-1, thanks to a last-minute goal from Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ). With the victory, FDU improves to 9-3-0 (2-0 NEC) on the season, while the Blackbirds fall to 2-10-0 (0-1 NEC) overall.

"I felt in the first half we played too passive and allowed LIU to push forward and serve unopposed into our box." Head Coach Eric Teepe said, "After they went up, we started to push forward and keep better possession. It was deserved in the second half that we found the goals as we clearly created numerous chances. In the end, this is what conference play is all about – finding a way to win."

The Knights found themselves down 1-0 with 15 minutes left to go at home and facing just their second loss at home all season. Junior co-captain Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) stepped up and fired a strike from 30 yards out to equalize the score in the 77th minute.

FDU earned a corner kick with seconds to go in regulation. Reigning NEC Player of the Week Hoekstra tallied her 10th goal of the campaign, and second in three days, to set a new school single-season record and pull out a victory for her team.

Both goals were assisted by Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ), her third and fourth over the last five matches.

Each team had six shots by the break but the Knights outshot the visitors 11-0 in the second stanza, including eight corner kicks.

LIU sophomore Madison Gomez scored her second goal in two straight contests in the 26th minute, assisted by Lucy Gunton-Jones.

Blackbirds goalkeeper Jessica Montrose made eight saves.

FDU are on the road for a NEC clash with Central Connecticut State on Friday, Oct. 10. Two days later, the Knights will host Robert Morris at University Stadium. Both contests will be broadcast live on NEC Front Row.
