Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team clinched a berth in the Northeast Conference Tournament for the second year in a row with a 1-1 draw at Wagner on Sunday. With the result, FDU moves to 12-4-1 (5-1-1 NEC) on the season, while the Seahawks improve to 8-6-3 (4-1-2 NEC) overall.
"I felt we struggled to find our legs today. Friday's game took a lot out of us and it showed today where it was very frantic and at times sloppy." Head Coach
Eric Teepe said, "Wagner did a good job of putting us under pressure with their long throw-ins and unfortunately we conceded late. We created some chances but we just couldn't find the quality to finish."
Junior
Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) continued her recent scorching form with an unassisted goal, her sixth, 14 minutes into the second period when she slipped past defenders and tucked her shot into the right corner. The goal is Tice's second in as many games and gives her 19 points on the season, second-most on the team and tied for third-most in program history for a single season.
An evenly contested battle throughout continued after Tice's strike until Wagner defender Amber Coca pounced on a ball in the box following a free kick to equalize in the 87th minute.
The Knights outshot the Seahawks, 12-11, while the hosts held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.
Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy made seven saves and FDU's
Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) made a season-high six.
"Looking at the weekend as a whole, it was positive. We played two tough matches and came out in a good spot where we still control winning the league." Teepe said.
The draw is the first of the season for FDU and snapped a three-game win streak but aside from a road loss at Central Connecticut State on Oct. 10, the Knights haven't dropped a game since Sept. 12.
FDU hosts Saint Francis University next Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, in the final match of the regular season. A win against the reigning NEC Champions would clinch the conference regular season title and allow the Knights to host this year's NEC Tournament. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. with the match being broadcast on NEC Front Row.
