HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team was defeated by Bryant, 95-68, in Northeast Conference action on Saturday at Stratis Arena. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 11-8 (3-1 NEC) on the season, while the Knights fall to 6-12 (2-2 NEC) overall.
Bryant was unconscious from the field in the first half, shooting 62.1 percent (18-of-29), including 8-of-12 from downtown en route to a 52-31 halftime advantage. FDU connected at a 40.7 percent (11-of-27) clip over the first 20 minutes but only made 2-of-8 from long range.
The Knights, however, came out of the gates in the second half scoring the first nine points and eventually extended their run to 20-6 over the first 7:35 of the stanza to cut the deficit to 58-51 with 12:25 remaining in the contest.
But the Bulldogs would answer with six straight points before FDU trimmed the lead back to 10 at 66-56 with 9:26 to go, but it was the closest the Knights would come.
Bryant would then close the game on a 29-12 flurry to cruise to the victory.
"Bryant had it going on all cylinders all day today, and we never played our type of basketball," Head Coach
Greg Herenda said. "We made a serious run at them in the second half and cut it to seven points, but we just did not have enough in the tank to finish the job."
The Bulldogs shooting remained hot in the second half (55.6 percent) while finishing the contest at 58.9 percent (33-of-56), including 11-of-17 from three-point range. FDU shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field and only 6-of-20 from behind the arc.
Another key in the game was points off turnovers, as Bryant outscored the Knights, 22-8. FDU turned the ball over 11 times and forced the Bulldogs into 10 miscues.
Senior
Sidney Sanders Jr. (Charleston, S.C./Burke) led the Knights with 21 points and a team-high five assists. Fellow classmate
Mathias Seilund (Dragoer, Denmark/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) added 15 points and tied a career high in rebounds with eight, while graduate student
Scooter Gillette (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) chipped in seven points and a career-best five blocked shots.
"Mathias' effort was overlooked today because we lost, but he played really well and was really the only consistent performer we had out there today," Herenda said.
Corey Maynard led five players from Bryant in double-figures with a game-high 30 points. Alex Francis added 22 points and seven rebounds, while Dyami Starks, Curtis Oakley and Curtis Oakley chipped in 15, 13 and 10 points, respectively.
FDU will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 23 when it hosts St. Francis Brooklyn at Stratis Arena for a NEC contest, with tipoff slated for 7 p.m.
