STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 6-0 loss to Stony Brook University on Sunday, Aug. 25 at LaValle Stadium. With the defeat, the Knights are now 1-1 on the season, while the Seawolves improve to 1-0-1.
The Knights were tested early with a Stony Brook penalty kick just five minutes into the contest. Senior goal keeper Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill) stopped the attempt to hold the game scoreless and give the Knights the momentum.
FDU maintained the advantage and tallied four shots from four different players in the next 20 minutes of play but were unable to score.
At the break, the Knights and Seawolves maintained a scoreless tie. The Seawolves held a 6-5 advantage in shots, while both teams recorded four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
Stony Brook took an initial lead in the 53rd minute when Larissa Nysch chipped a ball over DoVale to give the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage.
In the next 20 minutes the Seawolves produced a constant stream of pressure to challenge the backline and DoVale in goal. The pressure resulted in six goals to give the Seawolves a hearty lead.
The Knights continued to attack and recorded three shots in the final minutes but were unable to avoid the shutout.
Overall, the Seawolves took 21 shots, while holding the Knights to 11 attempts. The Knights recorded four shots on goal in the second half, with SBU adding six goals and four more shots on target.
DoVale earned the loss in the contest. She made six saves and allowed five goals in 78 minutes of play. Sophomore Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) played the final 12 minutes of the contest. She allowed one goal and made two saves.
The Knights will take one week before hosting Rider on Sunday, Sept. 1. Kickoff at University Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
