TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team will conclude its 11-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State in a three-game set at Soldier Field starting with a 3 p.m. contest Friday. The series will conclude Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m.
FDU (11-32) steps out of Northeast Conference play to take on a Hornets' squad who is in first place in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference North Division. The Knights are coming off a tough four-game series at Sacred Heart last weekend, which saw the Pioneers take all four games.
Senior
Kyle Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) hit .571 (8-for-14) at Sacred Heart with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases while reaching base at a .625 clip. He now leads the team in hitting (.315), hits (47), doubles (12), RBI (21), walks (19), HBP (9) and on-base percentage (.424).
Offensively, the Knights are hitting .265 and average 3.8 runs per game but are connecting at a .282 clip over their last 20 contests. On the mound, FDU has pitched to a 7.40 ERA in 345.1 innings of work while walking 199 and striking out 186.
Despite a tough outing last Sunday at Sacred Heart, freshman
Logan Frati (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) continues to lead the starters with a 3-2 record and a 5.72 ERA. He has tossed the second-most innings (50.1) and ranks second on the team with 26 strikeouts. Over his last 43.0 innings, Frati is 3-1 with a 3.35 ERA, 23 strikeouts and 12 walks, with opponents hitting .253.
Sophomore
Brendan Butler (W. Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also has three wins on the mound and leads the staff with 35 strikeouts and one complete game in 46.0 innings. Freshman
Nick Cuono (Hawthorne, N.J./Montvale Saint Joseph ) leads all pitchers with 51.0 innings on the bump.
Delaware State (32-13) has won 21 of 24 games in the MEAC, but all three losses are to Norfolk State, a team the Knights went 1-1 against over the opening weekend of the season in Savannah, Ga. The Hornets also defeated Army, a team FDU lost to, and swept a three-game series against Saint Peter's, who the Knights defeated earlier this season.
As a team, Delaware State is hitting .319 and averaging 7.2 runs per game. Seven regulars are hitting over .300 on the season, and the team has recorded 97 extra base hits and has stolen 136 bases in 155 attempts.
Defensively, the Hornets have a .955 fielding percentage and have committed 73 errors. Opponents are averaging 4.5 runs per game while hitting .254 off their pitching. In 369.1 innings on the mound, the staff has allowed 360 hits and 157 walks while striking out 260 and posting a 3.95 ERA.
FDU and Delaware State have met eight times in the all-time series, with the Hornets holding a 7-1 advantage.
After its weekend series, the Knights will conclude their 2013 season with a pair of doubleheaders next weekend against Quinnipiac at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. Alumni Day and Senior Day will take place on the final day of the season, Saturday, May 18.
