DOVER, Del. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped the opener of its three-game set at Delaware State, 6-3, Friday at Soldier Field. With the victory, the Hornets improve to 33-13 on the season, while the Knights fall to 11-33 overall.
After a scoreless first inning, DSU struck first in the bottom of the second to take an early 1-0 lead after a Hassan Evans' two-out RBI single to center field.
FDU, who was retired in order over the first three innings, broke through in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. With two outs, freshman
Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) delivered a two-run single to right-center field, scoring fellow classmate
Ryan McGrath (Lansingburgh, N.Y./Lansingburgh) and senior
Kyle Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood).
The lead was short-lived, as the Hornets responded in the bottom half of the fourth with three runs to retake the lead at 3-2, scoring on an RBI single, an RBI sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.
In the top of the sixth, the Knights put the tying runs on second and third with one out but failed to score. But in the seventh, FDU cut the deficit to 4-3 when sophomore
Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North) scored after an error by the left fielder on McGrath's two-out single.
DSU put the game away with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the opener, 6-3, as the Knights went down in order over the final two frames.
FDU managed only seven hits in the game, with McGrath and Weeks each going 2-for-4 with a run, while Roman had two RBI.
Sophomore
Joe Borelli (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan ) (0-7) was charged with the loss on the mound after lasting only 3.2 innings in the start. The righty allowed four earned runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out one.
The Hornets' Jordan Elliott moved to 9-1 on the season after limiting the Knights to two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work while walking none and striking out six. Elliott Gardner pitched the final two innings to record the save.
Five different players for DSU collected two hits, as the Hornets had 13 in the contest. Ryan Haas and Evans had two RBI, and Aaron Nardone plated a pair of runs.
The two sides will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
