INDIANAPOLIS -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's and women's tennis teams will make the roughly 350 mile trip from Teaneck, N.J. to Charlottesville, Va. for the second year in a row to take part in the NCAA Tournament where both squads will take on Virginia next weekend at the Snyder Tennis Center, the NCAA announced on Tuesday evening during its selection show.
For both sides, it will be a first-round rematch of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, which saw the Cavaliers win both matches, 4-0. It will also mark the third straight time the men's team will face Virginia in the opening round.
"We were at Virginia last year, so we are very comfortable there, and it it is great for the returning players because they have been there before," Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. "It will also be exciting for the new players as well. On both sides, Virginia is one of the top programs in the country."
On the men's side, the Knights (9-7) will go toe-to-toe with an undefeated Virginia squad (24-0) , who is the No. 2 overall seed, on Friday, May 10, at 1 p.m. A win over the Cavaliers would propel FDU into the second round the following day to face the winner of VCU and Minnesota at 3 p.m.
"On the men's side, Virginia is favored to win the national championship this year, and I look at is as an opportunity for our men to play in the finals in the first round," Buchman said.
The FDU women's team (11-6) will face a Cavaliers' lineup (17-9) that is the No. 14 overall seed in the tournament on Saturday, May 11, at 12 p.m. A victory over UVA would propel the Knights into a second round match against Texas or William & Mary the next day at 12 p.m.
"With the women, Virginia is a great team, and we played them last year," Buchman said.
"We need to go down there and do our thing, compete as hard as we can and leave everything we have all out on the court," Buchman said. "We have six seniors going down, four on the men's side and two on the women's team, so this is extra special for them, and we are all excited and looking forward to it. This is great for our program."
