NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team fell in a pair of games at Central Connecticut State on Sunday, April 21. The Knights dropped game one, 9-1, and fell 4-0 in game two. The Knights fall to 18-19 on the year with a 7-9 Northeast Conference mark, while the Blue Devils improve to 25-12 with a 13-3 NEC record.
The Blue Devils took the lead early in game one after two quick singles put runners on base. The Blue Devils ended the inning with a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs.
In the bottom of the third, CCSU took control of the game with five runs scored as the result of two hits, two FDU errors and a walk. After three innings, CCSU led 5-1.
The Knights recorded their first hit of the game in the top of the fourth. Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley High School) doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a single from Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union). Hayley Floyd (Selah, Wash./Selah High School) singled to left field to drive in Slye and put the Knights on the scoreboard.
Central added two runs in the sixth to secure the victory, 9-1.
Freshman Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) earned the loss in game one to move to 6-4 on the season. Stavrou allowed nine hits, while striking out two and walking four. The Knights were charged with nine runs on the day, but Stavrou earned just four
After three scoreless innings in game two, the Blue Devils homered to left field and added two more runs on a walk and two consecutive hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
CCSU used two more hits in the fifth inning to score a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Knights produced just one hit in the final innings and could not respond to the Blue Devils' lead. FDU ultimately fell, 4-0.
Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional High School) was tabbed with the loss in game two. She allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings. Lemm struck out six and walked three to move to 4-5 on the season.
Offensively, Nieves led the Knights in game two with two hits in three at bats.
The Knights will return to action when they take on the Gaels of Iona on Wednesday, April 24. First pitch in Hackensack, N.J. is set for 3 p.m.
