Baseball to Face Army on Wednesday

TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team hopes to end an eight-game skid when it takes a break from conference play and matches up against Army at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Knights (3-17) are coming off a sweep at the hands of Bryant, the Northeast Conference's first-place team, at home last weekend. Freshman Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) hit his first career home run, a solo shot, in the final game of the series. Senior Kyle Weeks (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) had five hits in the series, including a 3-for-3 performance in the third game, while freshman Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) hit .500 for the series, leading the team with seven hits over the four-game stretch, including a career-high three safeties in the opener.

Sophomore reliever Yonah Perline (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Dominic) pitched four scoreless innings, one in each game, lowering his ERA from 7.71 to 4.91. Freshman reliever Logan Frati (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) came in for three innings of work, giving up just one run in relief. In three appearances, sophomore Anthony Calise (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) pitched four innings without giving up a run or a hit. 

For the season, Weeks is leading the Knights with a .362 batting average. The second baseman also leads the team in doubles (6), hits (25), total bases (31), slugging (.449), walks (12) and on-base percentage (.476), while his 10 RBI rank second on the team.

Sophomore first baseman Ryan MacDonald (Bethpage, N.Y./Island Trees) and Sprague are the only other Knights hitting over .300 this season, batting .306 and .304, respectively. Senior Eric Anderson (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) leads the Knights in RBI with 12, and sophomore Riley Moonan (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero North) is tops on the team with 15 runs scored and seven extra-base hits, including an NEC-leading three triples.

Senior southpaw Matt Cadigan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) has a 3.86 ERA in 14 innings of work. Freshman Nick Cuono (Hawthorne, N.J./Montvale Saint Joseph ) leads the Knights with 25 innings pitched, and sophomore Brendan Butler (W. Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) has a team-leading 19 strikeouts. 

Army comes in to the contest with a record of 8-14 and is coming off a 1-3 performance in a series against Navy, winning the final game. Previously the Black Knights had played an exhibition against the New York Yankees, losing 10-5. Army dominated the NYIT Bears, a common opponent they share with the Knights, by scores of 12-1 and 9-1. 

The Black Knights have five players currently hitting over .300, led by senior catcher Andrew Johnson (.333). Freshman outfielder Jacob Page is batting .326 with a team-high 18 RBI and a .411 slugging percentage, along with seven steals. Infielder Alex Jensen is hitting .324 and leads the team with six extra-base hits. 

As a team, Army has stolen 33 bases out of 40 attempts. The team has also been hit by 48 pitches and drawn 93 walks. Despite having a losing record, the Black Knights have outscored their opponents 129-128. The Army pitching staff has a team ERA of 5.05 and opposing batters are hitting .295 against them. Sophomore right-hander Alex Robinett leads the staff with three wins and has posted a 4.06 ERA in seven starts. 

After their contest with Army, the Knights will travel to Wagner to start a four-game series against the Seahawks in NEC action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Staten Island, N.Y., April 5-7.
