Box Score

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team fell 3-2 in a midweek matchup to St. John's University on Wednesday, April 17 at the FDU Softball Field.  The Knights drop to 17-16 on the season, while the Red Storm improve to 12-28-1 on the year.

The Knights got on the scoreboard first with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Julia Northcutt (Irvine, Calif./Northwood High School) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Madelaine Wilen (Bakerfield, Calif./Ridgeview High School) singled to deep right field to score Northcutt and give the Knights a slight advantage.

In the top of the second, the Red Storm saw a runner single and then advance on a wild pitch.  The runner was driven home on a single to left field to tie the game at one.

The Red Storm took a 3-1 lead in the third with two consecutive singles followed by a two RBI double.  The Knights recorded two quick outs to end the third before St. John's could score again.

The Knights retaliated in the bottom of the fourth.  Freshman Courtney Slye (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley High School) reached on a St. John's infield error and moved to third on a single by Angelique Nieves (Union City, N.J./High Tech High School).  Senior Maire Shaugnessy drove Slye in to score on a bloop single to cut the deficit to just one run.

Although the Knights held St. John's scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, FDU was unable to capitalize on base runners and ultimately fell, 3-2.

Samantha Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional High School) earned the loss in the contest and falls to 3-4 on the season.  Lemm pitched four innings, while allowing three runs on five hits.  Freshman Loren Stavrou (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson Classical High School) allowed just one hit through three innings of relief.

As a whole, the Knights produced four hits, one each from Northcutt, Wilen, Nieves and Shaughnessy.  The Red Storm constructed six hits on the day.

The Knights are back in action this weekend when they travel to Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut State University for Northeast Conference double headers.
